When I became a photo organizer a little over a year ago, I joined the Association of Personal Photo Organizers (APPO) and dug into all of the training they offered. Founder Cathi Nelson has condensed all of this knowledge from various places into one easy-to-read, affordable paperback. There are so many tips and tricks, I will pull this volume off the shelf over and over. It's a great resource to use to find products and tools as well (Cathi's Pics). If you have any doubts about the importance of saving photos and telling their stories, the essays in the back of the book will convince you.
Photos are at the heart of our connections to family and friends, and the peace of mind gained when you know that treasured photos are safe and accessible is priceless. This book can get you there! Cathi lays out the details, in step-by-step format, for dealing with old prints and slides, digital images, home movies on film and video, and memorabilia. You'll learn best practices for handling, organizing, storing, and backing up all kinds of media, with tips and links to resources in each chapter. (Links are only a click away on the Kindle version - handy!) Of course the goal of all this organizing is to share the photos and stories, and there is an entire chapter with creative ideas.When you're feeling overwhelmed by your piles of disorganized photos, go back and read the last section in the book: "A Slice of Life: Essays About Photo Projects." While organizing your photos can be an extremely overwhelming endeavor, Cathi has masterfully broken down the process to make it seem doable. Cathi has written an easy to follow guide for those needing to take control of their photo collections. There are many areas I underlined so I can go back and read again once I'm actually in that step of the process. I will definitely use this as a resource during the organization process (for the areas that need help in my own collection). I particular like that she has divided the tasks into chapters by medium/type of photos/videos, so that I can go back and refer to just the parts that are applicable to my situation. And, the book includes so many resources I can, and will, check out.
Click bait book. Very weak on the how-too. "With your structure established, set up some index cards in sorting boxes on a table, and use these to group your photos as you sort." Uhh...there were about 4 paragraphs on how to set up a structure. Very heavy on the promoting-professional-organizers-like-the-author. The last third of the book consists of essays about people who like organizing photos. This book should be free.
Stop putting off organizing your photos. Cathi's book gives you the tools. She's a great storyteller who is helping others tell stories through photos. It's broken up neatly into chapters that you can read one at a time and avoid being overwhelmed. The "pics" at the end of each chapter provide great resources in the form of companies and websites that you probably never knew about, but can help you get organized easier and faster. I highly recommend this book.
