About the Author

Tarif Khalidi was born in Jerusalem in 1938. He received degrees from University College, Oxford, and the University of Chicago, before teaching at the American University of Beirut as a professor in the Department of History from 1970 to 1996. In 1985 he accepted a one-year position as senior research associate at St Anthony's College, Oxford, and from 1991 to 1992 was a visiting overseas scholar at St John's College, Cambridge. In 1996, Tarif Khalidi left Beirut to become the Sir Thomas Adams' Professor of Arabic at Cambridge University, the oldest chair of Arabic in the English-speaking world. He was also Director of the Centre for Middle East and Islamic Studies and a Fellow of King's College, Cambridge. After six years, Professor Khalidi returned to the American University of Beirut, taking on the Sheikh Zayed Chair in Islamic and Arabic Studies, the first chair to be filled at the University since the civil war.

Below I compare three modern translations: each an excellent alternative in comparison to other translations out there, such as old style Pickthall/Asad/Ali or Saudi influenced Hilali-Khan.~Basmalah~Ahmad Zaki Hammad:: In the name of God, the All-Merciful, the Mercy-Giving.MAS Abdel Haleem:: In the name of God, the Lord of Mercy, the Giver of Mercy!Tarif Khalidi:: In the name of God, Merciful to all, Compassionate to each!~31:18~Ahmad Zaki Hammad:: Moreover, do not turn your cheek to people [in contempt]. And do not ever walk upon the earth proudly exultant. Indeed, God loves no one who is swaggering [or] boastful.MAS Abdel Haleem:: Do not turn your nose up at people, nor walk about the place arrogantly, for God does not love arrogant or boastful people.Tarif Khalidi:: Do not turn your cheek away from people in contempt, and do not walk merrily upon the earth: God loves not every swaggering snob.My Opinion:: In regard to walking, Khalidi missed the sense of proudness and only mentions merrily, while Haleem missed the sense of being exultant and only mentions arrogance. Haleem, in addition, does not provide a literal translation, i.e. cheek, rather gives a more well-known idiom in English “turn up nose”. Hammad seems to be more accurate.~49:13~Ahmad Zaki Hammad:: O humankind! Indeed, We have created [all of] you from a [single] male and female. Moreover, We have made you peoples and tribes, so that you may [come to] know one another. And, indeed, the noblest of you, in the sight of God, is the most God-fearing of you. Indeed God is all-knowing, all-aware.MAS Abdel Haleem:: People, We created you all from a single man and a single woman, and made you into races and tribes so that you should get to know one another. In God’s eyes, the most honoured of you are the ones most mindful of Him: God is all knowing, all aware.Tarif Khalidi:: O mankind, We created you male and female, and made you into nations and tribes that you may come to know one another. The nobles among you in God’s sight are the most pious. God is All-Knowing, All-Experienced.My Opinion:: Not sure if Khalidi intentionally omitted the preposition “from”, but by saying “created you male and female”, withdrawing the preposition (originally in Arabic “min”) changes the scope of the verse. Also by saying God is “All-experienced”, Khalidi missed the point of God being continuously all-aware. Another important word here is atQaakum, which is related at-Taqwa and Muttaqun, which is usually translated to mean God-fearing or God-conscious. I feel Hammad again captures it better. But “mindful of God” as Haleem presents and “pious” as Khalidi translates are not wrong either.~67:5~Ahmad Zaki Hammad:: For very truly, We have adorned the nearest heaven with lights. And we have made [of] them, [as well] projectiles to [pelt] the satans. Moreover, We have prepared for [the satans in the Hereafter] the torment of the Flaming Fire [of Hell].MAS Abdel Haleem:: We have adorned the lowest heaven with lamps and made them [missiles] for stoning devils for whom We have also prepared the torment of a blazing fire.Tarif Khalidi:: We adorned the lower sky with Lanterns, and made them to be volleys against the demons, for whom We have readied the torment of the Blaze.My Opinion:: Each of Hammad, Haleem and Khalidi translates “Shayateen” as satans, devils and demons respectively. All conveys the meaning. Hammad uses too many brackets to convey contextual meaning, which sometimes can get mouthful. Heleem seems have done the best here.~78/1-3~Ahmad Zaki Hammad:: About what are they asking one another? About the Great Tiding [of the Afterlife]—it is about this that they dispute.MAS Abdel Haleem:: What do they question about the momentous announcement over which they differ?Tarif Khalidi:: What is it that they question each other about? Is it the Great Proclamation, concerning which they differ?My Opinion:: Here Haleem does not add “each other” or “one another”, which changes the scope of the verse. Are they question directed to God, to the Prophet or to each other?~79/1~Ahmad Zaki Hammad:: By the [angelic] pullers, pulling forth violently [the souls of the disbelievers at death]!MAS Abdel Haleem:: By the forceful chargersTarif Khalidi:: By those that dispatch, to the very limit!My Opinion:: Many translate first five verses of this chapter to include interpretations such as "angels", "winds", "stars", “herd of horses” etc. But these interpretations should not be in the body of the actual translation. All of three translators fall short here. Hammad adds angels in the bracket. Haleem, too, falls short here. He, in his footnote, remarks that in his opinion military horses are the most likely interpretation. As such his translation seems to be forced to match the description of a herd of military horses going out. Khalidi follows the logic similar to that of Haleem. Ignoring the brackets, Hammad provides the best translation, IMO.~103:1-3~Ahmad Zaki Hammad::By [the decline of] Time!Indeed, humankind is in [a condition of utter] loss—except for those who believe and do righteous deeds—and exhort one another to [uphold] the truth, and exhort one another to [persevere in faith with] patience.MAS Abdel Haleem::By the fading day, man is [deep] in loss, except for those who believe, do good deeds, urge one another to the truth, and urge one another to steadfastness.Tarif Khalidi::By the afternoon!Man is surely amiss!All save those who believe,Who do righteous deeds,Who enjoin truth upon one anotherWho enjoin patience upon one another.~~~My Conclusion:: Quran can't be properly translated into any other language to convey 100% of the meaning. In my opinion, Hammad provides the most accurate translation. The brackets can get mouthful, but are very useful in providing context. Haleem’s translation flows the best. He does not always provide literal translation but uses excellent uses of footnotes. In some places, his penchant for shorter and friendlier translation, he omits a word or two. Khalidi also falls to some error due to his desire for more poetic presentation. Hammad 5/5. Haleem 5/5. Khalidi 4/5. God knows best.

I don't speak Arabic and so I rely on multiple translations for study, and this by far is the best I have ever used.I use three translations for study: Khalidi, Haleem, and Asad. Your suffering distresses him: he is deeply concerned for you and full of kindness and mercy towards the believers. If they turn away, [Prophet], say, ‘God is enough for me: there is no god but Him; I put my trust in Him; He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.’Muhammad Asad:INDEED, there has come unto you [O mankind] an Apostle from among yourselves: heavily weighs upon him [the thought] that you might suffer [in the life to come]; full of concern for you [is he, and] full of compassion and mercy towards the believers. But if those [who are bent on denying the truth] turn away, say: “God is enough for me! There is no deity save Him. Having been a student and teacher of classical Arabic and the Quran for some time, I have read many the Quran many times in Arabic and English translations. This is one of the easiest modern English translations of the Quran I have found. It also has high accuracy. Any translation has short-comings so if you would like deeper research, look the exact words up in a dictionary like Lane's Lexicon. There is another Quran translation published back in 1980 from a collaboration between the Shia and Sunni councils of Lebanon that is also extremely good. I don't have any more information on it, and since I cannot find it in anywhere, I always recommend this translation.

I love this translation. I really wish Khalidi would expand upon it though and offer a version with contextual and historical notes. Most Muslims never read this one, but it's really a joy to read. I read it along with more literal and classical translations, like the one by Yusuf Ali or Sahih International, both of which are somewhat boring to read.

When I started reading this book, I found it supremely boring (no don’t kill me yet, hold your horses), and it was a struggle to keep at it. In fact, I would have certainly DNFed it, if not for the fact that I was buddy-reading this book with Bookish Muggle, and I really did not want to let her down.It’s the only reason I bothered to drag myself through the initial few chapters. And no, I am not saying it was all dreary, there were certainly sparks of excellence, but for the most part I was bored out of my mind.So from that kind of a beginning to now, when I’ve finished the book, and I’m obsessed with it – it’s clearly been quite a turnaround, and now I can’t imagine giving this anything less than 5 glorious stars.Sure, most of this has to do with a terrific second half, but in hindsight, I can see how the first half was as vital as the second to this wonderful wonderful story. Without the backstory, the second half wouldn’t have had the kind of impact it did.This one truly is a masterpiece, but I’m getting ahead of myself, so let’s back up a bit here.Jane EyreI know many people view this as an epic romance, a timeless love-story, and while it’s definitely one way of looking at it, I view this more as a ‘life story’. The tale of the evolution of a strong and independent female protagonist, a 19th century feminist, who was light years ahead of her time.I do not think, sir, you have any right to command me, merely because you are older than I, or because you have seen more of the world than I have; your claim to superiority depends on the use you have made of your time and experience.The author utilizes the first person narrative, which creates a high degree of intimacy with the character; it made me feel like I knew Jane as well as she comes to know her own self. And the more I knew her, the more I liked her.I am not saying I agreed with everything that she thought or did. For instance, she sure had a strong moral compass, which is great, but was a little too preachy at times. And no, I am not judging her for that, just saying. At any rate, none of us can claim perfection, so I can hardly expect that from her.Having said that, I do envy her strength of character in the face of tragedy and temptation.Laws and principles are not for the times when there is no temptation: they are for such moments as this, when body and soul rise in mutiny against their rigour; stringent are they; inviolate they shall be. If at my individual convenience I might break them, what would be their worth?She did not to let love justify all the mistakes and wrong choices, and refused to let it blind her to everything else that was important for her sense of self-worth. And I LOVED her for this unwavering determination to stay true to herself!I wish I could have declared with any degree of confidence that I would have acted in a similar manner too, but in all honesty, I cannot say that. I am not going to review the book, it's Jane Eyre, if you need to find a review there are plenty since 1847.This is about the kindle format. It's just bad. Some may even say horrible, but I live on the student budget so I am a bit on the beggers can't be choosers side. I didn't find it the worst format but the biggest annoyance I had was repeated sentences and even pages at times. Then my small nitpick that the following chapter just rests under the line of its predecessor. Why is that a thing? Are you trying to save the trees, its digital why not start the next chapter on the following page, it just looks cleaner.But wise word works and it can identify each chapter in the books, so in that regard, I didn't find it the worst format just in need of edits for the repeats. Also, heads up, keep iphone handy if you don't know french.

My favorite love story of all time!!! A young Jane Eyre is sent to live with her cruel aunt at Gateshead. She is then at the young age of ten forced to a school filled with harsh conditions and neglect. Jump eight years and you have a young woman ready to get out in the world . She then becomes a governess to the ward of Mr.Rochester Adele. Mr.Rochester is a brooding,mysterious type of fellow . Who's strange mood changes are caused by some type of mystery at thorn field where she is now staying. Not long after their first meeting Jane softens the heart of her employer whom she has fallen in love with. But Mr.Rochester holds a terrible secret ,that explains all the strange things happening at Thornfield. A secret that she is purposely excluded from,a secret that can drive the two lovers apart forever ......

I was assigned this book to read as a 13 year old high school freshman (I had skipped a grade). I could not get through it, and was horrified by the amount of words used to describe such trivial things as the shrubbery outside the school. I didn't understand it then. I can't remember at which point I gave up, bought the Cliff notes, and scored an eighty-something on the exam. I hadn't fooled the teacher; I actually admitted to her that I couldn't get through it. She didn't punish me, since she knew I truly did love reading all sorts of books. She let it slide.Now, being older and hopefully wiser, I still had to concentrate to read this. Many of the words were unfamiliar, old British words and phrases. But I have the concentration now to do so. In fact, it was an excellent escape from my daily housework, kids, job, finances, etc. It was nice to visit old England whenever I could spare some time for a few pages.Jane was a real heroine in the most basic meaning of the word. In all the book, she never did anything with malice (she did act unkindly on occasion where it was deserved, so I cannot call that malice, but more justice). She upheld her religious beliefs and personal righteousness, though never in a pompous way. She was good. Of Mr. Rochester, sometimes I feel (as he did) that he did not deserve her. But I believe that she would have--not changed him, but brought out more positive and humble feelings in him, just by watching her, listening to her, and being her other half. She had strength enough to bear both of them through life. Of course I liked this book. Jane, meek and small, pale and quiet, but stronger than anyone else in the book, ends up blissfully happy, though not without some difficulties. As she should.

Georgia is wildly ambitious but gets quickly brought back to earth when she struggles with the reality of learning how to see distances as well as teaching Loxwood to jump.Georgia is a winning narrator, easy to identify with yet also funny and passionate about riding. As an American, I loved learning more about the riding scene in the UK. For example, self-care liveries (stables) seem to be much more common across the pond.Georgia finds a second family in the world of riding, including people who guide her through her first event and who also understand the joys of obsessively talking about horses (and watching Badminton on television) as well as riding, unlike her parents. I really wanted to be part of Georgia’s world by the end of the book.

I am completely delighted by Grace Wilkinson's writing, characters, and settings in the Loxwood series. Wilkinson understands horses and the sport, and more importantly, she's very good at describing the way these passions make horse-people feel. I could be Georgia, and Loxwood could be a horse I had a unique connection with in the past. I'm on pins and needles waiting for the next installment.

These books by Grace Wilkinson are awesome! Very realistic in all settings,at the racetrack,the eventing barn or home, you feel as if you are there along with the characters. All characters are well-developed, I laughed and cried as the main character,Georgia,works to make her dreams come true. I was a riding instructor and trained racehorses,and these books help me remember moments I have had. I am definitely reading all this author's stories,they are fun and happy.

This installment was if possible even better than the first one! Georgia makes friends at the horse shows and trains her horse to be an event horse. She is not perfect and has some struggles in the beginning, but her friends help her overcome her problems. We get some insight into what is going on with Paige as well.Can't wait for the next one!

While reading the beginning of this book, It felt as if it was autobiographical. Honestly, It felt like the story of my childhood. In my case, however, I had to continue to play out the fantasy because we lived in the city and my circumstances were quite unlike the girl in this book.

Georgia and Loxwood are the perfect team and their adventures are a great lesson in perseverance. I will recommend this series to young and adult equestrians! Grace Wilkinson is creative and tells a good story.

I love both books in this series. Great storylines, believable characters, lovable horses, and well written. I can't wait for the next book to come out!

Georgia is still a teenage girl, but has more moments of maturity. Looking forward to #3, but battery needs charging - both table's and mine .

This book is a tour of belief, knowledge and doubt by way of psychology and a heavy dose of philosophy. If you have any interest in epistemology, then this book is a must read! Schulz takes a look at inductive reasoning and how it's so efficient and serves us so well, but when it fails, it can fail hard. She shines a light on the fallibility of our physical senses and memory and how what seems so obviously right is sometimes absolutely wrong. While this may be paradigm shifting (and disturbing) for some people who haven't ever considered what one self can actually know, you don't need to fear succumbing to hard solipsism after reading this book.The author takes a look at why we fear being wrong so strongly, and how we often can't admit we are wrong until we have a new "right" theory to replace our wrong one. We discover that our error blindness keeps us from perceiving our own errors without hampering our ability to find the same or similar error in others. Practically all facets of our lives are affected by error - from politics to religion to love. Can we eliminate error? Even if it is possible, SHOULD WE? Error appears to be a uniquely human endeavor - as such we should embrace it (at least some of the time). The joy of being wrong is experienced daily through optical illusions, humor and art.Favorite quotes from the book:(pg. 31) there is a slippery slope between advocating the elimination of putatively erroneous beliefs, and advocating theelimination of the institutions, cultures, and—most alarmingly—people who hold them(pg 32) This was the pivotal insight of the Scientific Revolution: that the advancement of knowledge depends on currenttheories collapsing in the face of new insights and discoveries. In this model of progress, errors do not lead usaway from the truth. Instead, they edge us incrementally toward(pg. 70) In sum: we love to know things, but ultimately we can't know for sure that we know them; we are bad at recognizing when we don't know something; and we are very, very good at making stuff up.(pg 82) It’s not exactly news that most people are reluctant to admit their ignorance. But the point here is not that we arebad at saying “I don’t know.” The point is that we are bad at knowing we don’t know.(pg 86) As that suggests, the idea of knowledge and the idea of error are fundamentally incompatible. When we claim toknow something, we are essentially saying that we can’t be wrong. If we want to contend with the possibilitythat we could be wrong, then the idea of knowledge won’t serve us; we need to embrace the idea of beliefinstead. This might feel like an unwelcome move, since all of us prefer to think that we know things rather than“merely” believing them.(pg 106) In other words, if we want to discredit a belief, we will argue that it is advantageous, whereas if we want tochampion it, we will argue that it is true. That’s why we downplay or dismiss the self-serving aspects of our ownconvictions, even as we are quick to detect them in other people’s beliefs.(pg 123) leaping to conclusions is what we always do in inductive reasoning, but we generally only call it that when theprocess fails us—that is, when we leap to wrong conclusions. In those instances, our habit of relying on meagerevidence, normally so clever, suddenly looks foolish(pg 141) The vast majority of our beliefs are really beliefs once removed. Our faith that we are right is faith that someoneelse is right. This reliance on other people’s knowledge—those around us as well as those who came before us—is, on balance, a very good thing. Life is short, and most of us don’t want to spend any more of it than absolutelynecessary trying to independently verify the facts(pg 157) Just as disturbing, and more important, we also can’t be sure that some of the beliefs we hold today won’t appeargrievously unjust in the future. This is error-blindness as a moral problem: we can’t always know, today, whichof our current beliefs will someday come to seem ethically indefensible(pg 161) What zealots have in common, then, is the absolute conviction that they are right. In fact, of all the symbolicones and zeros that extremists use to write their ideological binary codes—us/them, same/different, good/evil—the fundamental one is right/wrong. Zealotry demands a complete rejection of the possibility of error.(pg 167) Doubt, it seems, is a skill—and one that, as we saw earlier, needs to be learned and honed. Credulity, bycontrast, appears to be something very like an instinct(pg 179) Whether you believe in flying saucers or the free market or just about anything else, you are (if you are human)prone to using certainty to avoid facing up to the fact that you could be wrong. That’s why, when we feelourselves losing ground in a fight, we often grow more rather than less adamant about our claims—not becausewe are so sure that we are right, but because we fear that we are not.(pg 187) Fortunately, we don’t get stuck in this place of pure wrongness very often. And we don’t get stuck there via thecollapse of small or medium size beliefs. We get stuck there when we are really wrong about really big things—beliefs so important and far-reaching that we can neither easily replace them nor easily live without them.(pg 199) All of us know people like this—people whose rigidity serves to protect a certain inner fragility, who cannotbend precisely because they are at risk of breaking. For that matter, all of us are people like this sometimes(pg 209) our beliefs come in bundles. That makes it hard to remove or replace one without affecting the others—and itgets harder as the belief in question gets more central(pg. 217) we are exceptionally bad at saying “I was wrong”—or at least, we are bad at leaving it at that. For most of us, it’s tough not to tack that “but” onto every admission of error.(pg 293) This is one of the most powerful ways being wrong can transform us: it can help us become more compassionatepeople. Being right might be fun but, as we’ve seen, it has a tendency to bring out the worst in us. By contrast,being wrong is often the farthest thing in the world from fun—and yet, in the end, it has the potential to bringout the best in us.

Shulz’s book is a thoughtful, powerful work that should be required reading for everyone in high school or college – and beyond. Part philosophy, part sociology and part reporting, “Being Wrong” feels a lot like Kahneman’s “Thinking: Fast and Slow” and, in my view, is every bit as helpful and important for understanding what drives us (as well as what steers us off a cliff or unhelpfully slams on the brakes). The chapter on Heartbreak is the most valuable piece of writing I’ve read on that issue despite the fact this isn’t a “self-help” book. The complexity of the issues here and the deftness and doggedness with which she pursues them puts her on par with Steven Johnson and maybe even Michael Lewis. Not a fast or simple read but very highly recommended.

If you want to get a new perspective on how beliefs and perceptions influence decisions then read this book. It is important to note that Kathryn Schultz has a stunning vocabulary. It is not often that I have to look up a word but with this book I did on several occasions. I have recommended this book to all of my friends and family. I have read parts to my wife and we both said "hmmm." I now examine why I feel someone or something else is wrong. As much as I don't want to agree with people that have opposing political views, I try to see if they are right because of this damn book. Great read and very inciteful.

I guess . . .Is this a new problem?“If you commit a moral transgression, you can turn to at least a handful of established options to help you cope with it. Virtually every religious tradition includes a ritual for penitence and purification, along the lines of confession in Catholicism and Yom Kippur in Judaism.’’(only religion?)“Twelve-step programs advise their participants to admit “to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.” Even the criminal justice system, although far from reform-minded these days, has one foot rooted in a tradition of repentance and transformation. By contrast, if you commit an error—whether a minor one, such as realizing halfway through an argument that you are mistaken, or a major one, such as realizing halfway through a lifetime that you were wrong about your faith, your politics, yourself, your loved one, or your life’s work—you will not find any obvious, ready-to-hand resources to help you deal with it.’’This seems so odd. Errors, wrong decisions, false conclusions, are always with us and constantly hurting. Yet, we don’t know how to react. Great book full of real science I can show my family and friends exactly why I don't posion myself or my family.

I love that I have all of the information in one place that can't be lost all over my house, but the text is so small and fuzzy that it's not incredibly easy to read.

Great book! I do realize I can find all the same info online, but this gives me enough info to start my research and I can then go online and look further into different topics.

This book is cover to cover full of information. Cheaper than printing and more information than I'd be able to find alone. Good work. I'm impressed.
