The best thing about A Brain Is Born is the fact that Dr. Upledger wrote it in plain and simple language and he accompanies the written with wonderful illustrations. The print is large and it is easy to read and understand. And the information is incredible. He starts at conception and follows the development of a baby and how especially the brain and central nervous system is formed. And I love how he also explains at what stage of development certain birth defects might be formed at. For example, Spina bifida. I would challenge any person who believes in abortion to read this book and see what is really happening inside a mother's womb. Truly a baby is being formed... EVERY single day from conception on.

Very informative, simple terms, simple pictures that are good for helping comprehension and easy remembering. Excellent for body workers working with children, and those practicing Cranio Sacral Therapy.There's a bad review of the book on here, and I can see that person's point of view... however, I think you need to understand that this is a textbook and foundation for one of Upledger's classes. It's not really rainy day reading, nor is it a medical text. Nor is it "advertising."It is, however, typical Upledger teaching style, and for those interested in learning or studying Upledger's work, this one is a great book to add to the collection.

The information is presented just like Ronald is talking directly to you. It includes up to date studies and explains the why behind all of his ideas. I will definitely share this book with my colleagues.

First off, I want to be clear about the focus of my review. Book reviews should center on the genre (type) of book, the content as it is expressed within the genre, and the quality of the writing itself (and how that writing meets or does not meet the demands of its target audience). In case you hadn't already guessed, I am both an English teacher and a writer, so I would like to think I have a bit of experience in this area. First, genre. This book is an autobiography, centering largely on Meyers' experiences at the battle of Ganjigal and its aftermath. As a result, you are going to hear strong opinions, raw emotion, and bloody accounts. You may not agree with them. That is fine. But do not be shocked that this man, this Marine who came as close to Hell as the living can, has a lot to say about it. Again, this is an autobiography, written by the author about himself. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the author will have definite opinions about his own life, and that they do not always please the masses. That is not the point of an autobiography. If bloody imagery, angry recriminations against military leaders, and honest portrayal of personal attributes don't appeal to you, that is also fine. But autobiography is then not the genre for you. For rip-roaring accounts of military bravery where the good guys always win (and are perfect), the bad guys always lose, and no one dies, I suggest the fiction section. For everyone else, if you can handle the description above, you will probably appreciate this young man's account. It satisfies the requirements for an autobiography quite well. I would have liked to know more about the author's early life, but being that he seems naturally to be a man of few words--and that the book is about his combat experiences--I can easily overlook that. As for the content, in the context of military literature, Meyers sums up the key points without becoming verbose. He does repeat certain points, but if you read the entire book, it is quite easy to see why! Some readers will find his lack of explanation of some of the acronyms frustrating. However, this problem is easily remedied by a Google search of any term not understood (just as you would look up words with which you were unfamiliar in a dictionary). I hope the possibility of encountering unfamiliar words will not discourage anyone from reading the book. There are maps and full-color pictures included in the book. I found the first confusing and the second illuminating. You may feel differently, but either way, these extras in no way detract from the reading. As far as actual text is concerned, while Meyers spends a lot of time downplaying his own actions, he simultaneously gives credit to those who helped that day. Those who appreciate fairness and humility in an autobiography will most likely enjoy this book. Some readers may find some of his comments about killing disturbing. That is understandable. I view these comments as coming from a grieving heart that has been trained for combat. I may not agree with every single thing the man says, but nor do I judge him for it. Finally: writing meeting the target audience's requirements. Some books are written for children, some for adults, some for specific segments of the population, and some for everyone. This book was written for everyone. Meyers wants people to know what happened (in hopes it will never happen again) and to honor his friends. It is not written by an academic; it is written by a young man who signed up for the Marines at 17 years old. The writing is of a simple and unsophisticated style. Bing West, the acclaimed journalist who helped Meyers write the book, makes very clear that the words are Meyers', not West's. If simple, unpolished writing is not for you, that is fine. But choose a different book. I enjoyed it precisely because Meyers, the man who was actually there, is the narrator. This book is uncompromising in its candor and unapologetic in its pathos. It is not pretty, sanitized, or neatly wrapped up at the end. Life isn't always that way, either. And that is what an autobiography is: the story of someone's life. In this case, it is the story of a combat veteran, and as such, it meets the requirements for a good story. Furthermore, if this man can live through these experiences and be brave enough to share them, I feel that the least I can do is respectfully and thoughtfully listen to what he has to say. I can consider the large-scale effects of war, as well as its effects on individuals, without lapsing into hasty judgments. My advice for potential readers is to focus on the story itself, for that more than meets the requirements for compelling autobiography.

I work with guy who did two tours in Afghanistan. I knew him before he left for his first tour. He was army reserve before he was called to service. A willing and eager participant true blue American ready and happy to serve his country. The man that has come back isn't same guy who left. I know very little about the war in Afghanistan and wanted to learn a little of what my friend went through. This book describes one epic battle among many that have taken place. A very descript horrifying story. Dakota Meyer true American hero that I will always admire and not soon forget. I will never understand rules of engagement established by a committee that in lot of cases never have seen combat. This book is a must read very well written not sugar coated at all about the bad politics of war in general.

This is one of those books that shows both the best and worst of humanity. War is so horrible that it always manages to bring out the worst, but often it also brings out the best. Dakota and Rod charged into a situation where death could be reasonably expected to result. They did so five times. One lucky round, one RPG or rocket, and they are dead or worse, incapacitated to be captured and tortured to death. Without them, probably no one escapes. We all like to think we’d be that guy, but I can admit I would come up short. These aren’t just good people, these are the absolute pinnacle of humanity.This book also serves to illustrate how the US hampers itself, especially by not understanding our foes and our erstwhile allies. Sure, be too liberal with artillery and the Afghans will hate us, but at least they would respect us. By not supporting our own, we telegraph that we are weak. As a seventh century culture, the Afghans despise weakness, and having beaten the Soviet Union (and earlier, the British Empire) by simply being tougher, they have no doubt that the Taliban will ultimately win. This battle also vividly displays our paucity of planning. Our military commanders failed to clearly establish a chain of command, which in itself is an often fatal flaw that any amateur can see. They established a platoon as a QRF for a company, even though conditions of terrain prevented that platoon from having its multiplier effect. And ultimately that platoon chickened out, refusing to do its job. For a company intentionally going into a perfect ambush situation, the QRF should have been a second infantry company reinforced with that light armored platoon. And worst of all, they established a strong artillery force with ROE that intentionally neutered it. Artillery wins battles, but only if one uses it. Before sending in Americans, commanders have an absolute moral duty to evaluate conditions, reaction forces, and support according to the ROE and the potential threat rather than what the enemy usually does. It’s just like Benghazi, and it’s only because Meyer is The Pitbull that anyone received even the tiniest reprimand. It also shows our failure to properly use our technological advantage. Given that circumstances gave our seventh century foe ample time and Intel to set up the perfect ambush, that area should have been under constant electronic and optical surveillance. Then the Allied force would have been forewarned and the ambushers could have been surrounded and annihilated. THAT would have gotten the locals on our side.One lone happy note: Swenson finally received his much-deserved Medal. Just as without Rod and Dakota likely no one would have been saved, without Swenson likely there would have been no one left to save.Bing West has done an excellent job with this book. Congrats on a strong crime novel with a romantic twist. The characters were well developed and the plot kept me keenly interested. It is a great read and could likely be the first of many books from this author.

Well paced thriller! This is a story of a man and his dog who save a life, outrun a killer, navigate publicity and carve out a life of meaning. The characters are great people and the hero just happens to be gay. This is a great page turner and I didn't want to put it down!

I read it cover to cover in a day --crunchy popcorn with tight curves that tie up nicely AND make sense!Oh, and a solid rainbow message that doesn't feel sticky sweet. Solid writing, good story and an oasis of entertainment on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

I highly recommend this book. It is a unique crime story with a gay hero. Written by a Renaissance Man.

Couldn’t put it down! Wonderfully descriptive tale of sacrifice for a stranger, a bond with a dog and the price and rewards of heroism. Great read!!!

I've read several reviews on this book, and only hesitantly selected it for a quick read. I was initially thinking that I'd write a review that simply said "if you like to read about poor decision making and guilt, then this book is for you." However, as the story progressed, I've found that it became a powerful and impactful plot line with rich characters and a number of unexpected twists. It was quite a pleasure to read and potentially one of the better books I've read recently.Some reviews have made claims to the effect that an astute reader may figure out the ending. I consider myself reasonably astute, but I was so far off on my theory that I was thrilled at the actual ending. I'm impressed if you can figure this one out; you're a much better detective than I am.The character development is surprisingly rich. It starts off fairly flat, but gains depth and complexity as the story evolves. The author switches perspectives each chapter, and terminates each one with a mini-cliffhanger, leaving the reader somewhat frustrated at the dangling threads. However, by the end of the book, the threads are all tied up.So, I highly recommend the book, and suggest that you stick with it through the beginning where the tone comes across as dreary and whiny. It more than pays off for your patience in the end.Enjoy.

I am really sick of the many, many mysteries that have become best-sellers lately which don't have any suspense or mystery in them.I feel like warning other people who love mystery not to bother -- unless you are quite forgiving and don't expect any real surprises or things that make sense.So, SOME spoilers*******The writing is flat, the characters are flat, but this didn't, at first deter me from reading it. Agatha Christie is not exactly a great prose writer, and she does manage to surprise the reader and to build interesting cliffhangers and plots.About 50% into the book I was getting a bit fed up, because there was NOTHING happening. There were chapters ending with stuff like "She couldn't tell anyone what she knew" or "He had done something disgusting" -- not exactly this, but this kind of attempt to create suspense.Well, if you do that, then DELIVER. Instead, it just kept going on, and on and on in the same vein, with us not finding anything else, just more of these from the same characters.One girl has a problem with an abusive dad (GROAN) and thinks he may have something to do with her friend's disappearance -- resolved off page. The dad of the disappeared girl has such a big secret he almost kills himself in a barn. The secret turns out to be so pathetic that I got mad at having to read his thoughts for chapters and chapters. Then, shoot, maybe the girl isn't dead, and we have several chapters of EVERYONE looking at the TV at some police negotiation with a kidnapper.But HEY, it isn't her. The way they saw that it isn't her is sooooo ridiculous that I laughed quite a bit.In the meantime, chapters and chapters about the woman who saw the girls on the train but didn't tell the police they went off with young men because she couldn't decide if that was slutty, dangerous or normal. She is supposed to be the main character and she goes on and on and on and on about her flower shop.Then about her son, who got his girlfriend pregnant. NONE of this has any bearing on the mystery.Then she hires a private detective because she is getting postcards saying "I'm watching you."A lot about the detective, his pregnant wife, their baby being born. Not a lot of detecting. Oh, also the "standard police trauma" (he shot an innocent kid) being introduced late in the game and in a perfunctory manner.There are some police people with a grudge against each other which means zilch to the investigation and changes nothing.Clues that are not clues (just people acting strangely) are given chapters and chapters and chapters to then mean nothing and often get resolved off book.About halfway into the story a POV in italics of the typical psycho ("I'm watching you...I don't like her to be watched...etc") gets introduced and is repeated in the same cliché way several times.FINALLY, the mystery is solved in the MOST RIDICULOUS POSSIBLE WAY. Not through anyone figuring anything out, not by the several police that have been introduced or the private detective -- but because the flower lady SEES A PHOTO.At this point I was covering my mouth in disbelief that any book that sells this much could be so awkward, badly written and unsurprising.Just think of the worst, most awkward episode of one of these TV series about crime. It will be better than this, because it will, at least, be forced to have clues and real suspects.I am AT A LOSS! Truly. I loved Gone Girl, I thought Girl on the Train was disappointing after 60%, this one was just a HUGE waste of time for anyone who truly loves mysteries and wants to follow clues, suspects and be surprised. If you're like that, give this a WIDE berth...

I think the author wanted to really get into the various characters, but I found the book very frustrating to read. What was supposed to be a hook at the end of many chapters, never led to anything. I really didn't care about the pages and pages of Ella's flower shop. It just seemed like filler. Something to fill pages. There was too much telling and not enough showing. Also, the mix of first person, then third person, was distracting.It's hard for me to get used to the British lack of tension in a mystery, if this is what this was. Using a knife as a weapon, though dangerous, isn't as scary as a gun. You can outrun, or outmaneuver a person with a knife, but it's hard to outrun a bullet. She tries to make the use of the knife seem really threatening. Maybe up close and if the assailant has a hold of you, but they have to catch you first. Any smart kid can dodge a knife. I just didn't find this very tension-filled at the end. Sorry for the spoiler alert.I found this an okay read, but I kept thinking, when is something going to HAPPEN! The author's attempts at ending chapters with a hook, left me frustrated. Nothing was revealed until the epilogue. If this is her style of writing, I probably won't read any of her other books. They make me want to throw it across the room, which I couldn't because it would break my Kindle.

Rarely do I write any review, especially without being prompted, but this book! Oh my goodness! I had to put some effort into avoiding tears reading it to my children. I'm so thankful to be able to give "Listening with my Heart" to my kids, and it's tempting to wonder what it could've done for me growing up, as I am 27 and had only recently begun learning and putting into practice the concept so effectively communicated through this book.

I just read this with my daughter last night. She is 7 .. she has been struggling with a lot lately. She is down on herself at times. This book was a true pick me up!! and I love the exercises at the back of the book. I started out reading the book and SHE wanted to read it.. So THANK YOU for this book...

My daughter who is 4 actually calls out for this book by the authors name.." Mom, get the Gabi Garcia book". We read it weekly. The story line truly manages to help teach compassion and empathy and it also motivates my young daughter to share her own examples of how we should treat others. The book never gets old.

The illustrations were perfect. The message was clear. This book teaches children to love themselves, and gives tips on how they can do so.

I am a school counselor working for an international school in China and I stumbled on this little book and was pleasantly surprised. I loved the fact that the characters in the book were so culturally diverse just like my students. Some of my students take embarrassment and failures so hard and need to be reminded to be kind to themselves. Gabi found a way to pull you into Esperanza's world so quickly that you'll feel you've known her all your life. My students love the story and the lesson! I hope to see more books like this in the future. Well done!

Such a lovely book with important lessons about kindness towards oneself and the power of a small kind gesture to others. Resilience and the ability to recover from disappointments are things that many children don't learn in a society where so many parents either intervene to try and make things better or don't allow self-compassion themselves. I loved how this book ended with discussion points at the end so that parents, caregivers and teachers can gently but clearly reenforce the lessons of the book.

Such a beautiful book to teach children self compassion and love. I will be buying this book for every child that comes into my life. I believe the parents will also start to learn self compassion when they read it. What a wonderful world this will be when we all learn to love ourselves!

Given the condition of our world today, kids just need this message.
