Alexa is the chief of staff for the mayor of San Francisco; Drew is a pediatric surgeon in L.A. Sparks fly when they're trapped in an elevator together, and Drew invites Alexa to be his date for a weekend wedding. She's looking to break out of a dating slump and agrees to go; they end up having a wonderful time and a long distance romance begins. But as they grow closer, will either of them admit that it's more than just a fling?I will say two good things and one criticism about the book. The first good thing: it is a joy to read, like sipping hot chocolate, warm and sweet and goes down easy. In this tumultuous time we're living in, that goes a LONG way; it is pure comfort reading. The writing is funny and effortless. I never wanted to stop reading, and I felt satisfied when it was done. The second good thing is how much I enjoyed reading a book with two professionally accomplished leads. They both have challenging careers, and they both care about their work and are good at it. We see both of them in professional settings, thinking about their work, stressing about things that matter. Alexa is trying to fund an arts program for at-risk teenagers, and Drew has a kid who's not recovering well after surgery. They also both have broad social circles filled with interesting, good people. I really enjoyed reading a book in which the characters are essentially all role models. Alexa in particular is a well drawn character, with relatable insecurities and a sharp, funny way of looking at the world. Drew is a bit more generic, but he's still a good guy.And this brings me to the criticism -- there isn't any real conflict. Drew is commitment phobic, and tends to dump women after a few months; and Alexa is worried about getting attached to him. But this doesn't ever go anywhere. I always find it irritating when the big conflict of the book could be resolved if either character would just talk to the other one. What's a little stranger is that there is potential for real conflict here. Alexa is black and Drew is white, and beyond that, Ms. Mallory does talk about the white privilege that Drew enjoys, and there is one instance where he makes a somewhat uninformed remark about her youth program. I'm curious why she didn't build more conflict around that -- not around racial issues, particularly; I liked that they were inter-racial. But why not build conflict that is more original and specific to who these people are, and the work they do? At one point Ms. Mallory mentions in passing that they have to learn how to adapt to two difficult and challenging careers; that is also an interesting conflict, rarely explored, and these are two characters who could handle it.There's part of me that enjoyed a book in which nothing bad happens, but it also was a little odd that this is a book in which nothing much happens: two attractive, likable, accomplished people meet, fall in love, and.... the end, basically! All that being said -- it was warm, and sweet, and comforting, and funny, and I'm on board for all of that. A good read that deserves to be read.(And P.S. just to back up what Roxane Gay said in her 5-star review: it is very funny how much they ate. I guess since they weren't fighting, and they couldn't have sex ALL the time, they needed something else to do, so they ate constantly -- donuts, waffles, burgers, burritos, more donuts, more donuts. It was kind of hysterical.)

I wanted to love it. The two leads have real jobs and each has a small circle of friends. But there was no oomph to the plot. I felt like the characters were just spinning their wheels until the inevitable happy ending. There wasn't even a good sense of place. San Francisco should be a good setting but this was the most generic version of SF.

Fun, frothy rom-com read that would make a delightful movie. (Admit I've been dream casting it in my head ever since I finished reading it. Think I mentally settled on Chris Pine and Nicole Beharie for the leads. Make it happen, Hollywood!)From the moment Alexa and Drew meet cute in a stuck elevator and she agrees to be his wedding date for the weekend, sparks fly between the poised political operative and hunky pediatrician. As their cross-California romance goes from faux to fabulous, the two see if there's more to their relationship than just a couple wild weekends.Devoured this on vacation and it's the perfect beach read. Smart, funny, a little bit sexy (but not graphic), and just a truly delightful summer, or anytime, read. And while it's undeniably light reading, it also has stuck with me long after most modern romances have totally faded from memory. Jasmine Guillory is a true find and I can't wait to read what she has coming out next. (It's THE PROPOSAL, another fun-as-heck sounding romance, which I've already pre-ordered.)

Cliched, boring, predictable plot lurches from one soft porn love scene to the next. I was looking for something light and easy and entertaining, but I couldn't even finish this one.

Saw this on a buzz feed article about fun summer reads and it being a great rom-com style book. It wasn't.The two characters were mildly interesting, but their "relationship development" was a span of 2 months of weekend sex trips. It only bothered me because in the "sample" and even the build up of the wedding, there was such promise of a cute story, but then you got past their first hookup and it was like the author didn't know what else to do besides have them bone down for 75% of the book. Also, the text fighting and juvenile fighting packed depth and believability to the romatic notion that these two characters would be together.

#585,977 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Beginner's Guide to Character Creation in Maya is one of the more detailed and in depth book that covers 3D character modelling with Maya. The first thing you need to know is the book not only covers Maya, but also uses Mudbox for some of the modelling. The software used are Maya 2015 (Service Pack 2), Mudbox 2015, Photoshop CS6 and Nuke. You can probably still use software that are one or two versions older but the book does mention new features that are only available in the new software.Second thing to note is there are more than 30 hours of video files that accompany the lessons. The video files are huge, like 59GB. Unlike other books, 3Dtotal has opted to use Bittorrent for distributing the files this time and the download speed is rather slow. If there are no seeders, then technically speaking you can't even download the file. I would have imagined that there would be at least one seeder, like you know, from 3Dtotal themselves. They should have just split up the files to go with the chapters or even page numbers. Then readers would not have to download such big files at one go, or go through the wait for seeders to appear.Alright, about the book...The chapters are namely1. Pipeline and interface2. Anatomy, modeling and sculpting3. Texturing and shading in Maya and Mudbox4. Rigging and deformation in Maya5. Locomotion and animation in Maya6. Lighting and rendering in MayaThe book covers not only modelling but also helps you to understand the pipeline workflow. That's so that you can share your assets for others to work on while you continue to touch up your model. The book is written for beginners and covers only the tools you'll use for modelling. The tools would be those commonly used for polygon modelling. You can come in with absolutely no knowledge on Maya although it would definitely be less intimidating if you have already worked on Maya before. The Maya interface is covered in the first chapter. This book really goes into the details. There's a rather lengthy coverage on the muscles and bones in the anatomy chapter. Generally speaking, the book not only covers the technical aspects, but also wants you to understand the rationale behind. Like why do you model something this way? How do you mimic the way the human body moves in a believable manner. And before you can start to animate your walk cycle, animation concepts are presented. For texturing, there's a section that talks about the skin and how you can prepare reference images for use as texture files, e.g. how you should set up your photoshoot to capture accurately coloured photo reference. The last chapter talks about lighting and rendering. The author and instructor is Jahirul Amin is a 3D trainer at Double Negative, a visual effects/CGI company in London. That guy is a pro and you can tell by the content written and this thick 296-page book. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. There are numerous screenshots provided to show you what they are talking about.Overall, this is a rather comprehensive course, and a great book for beginners to 3D character modelling in Maya. There's so much content you'll probably have to spend a week or two to really complete all the lessons. And then there are those 30 hours of video files to sweeten the deal (provided you have no problems downloading them).(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

While it is very clear on the structure and progression of character creation, this book fall to to the "add some edge loops wherever" and "go ahead and retopologize" problems that I was hoping would be answered through following the instructions. It is hard to get very far into the book without needing to stop and find instruction elsewhere. I understand that you hand should not be held throughout all steps, but being dropped in before a foundation is set will scare away those this book was made for.I found a great number of the instructions helpful, and will continue to use this book as a reference, but be prepared to take breaks from it for more detailed help near the beginning.

Excellent book, definitely more of the upper mid level range though not for beginners. Really a thorough walkthrough of the entire pipeline from modeling through texturing, rigging, and a little animation

It was better than I thought. It helped me so much in my college class. So much information and it lays it out in the best way.

All of the 3DTotal books are incredible, they're they best instructional art books on the market.

Hi, I am from Mexico and the book is great I have started to read immediately... But the video 2 in chapter 01 has troubles please reload it or load a different version of it if I find more bad things I will write

Love it excellent.

Not a "Beginners" book at all... don't buy this if you are are not experienced with Maya! A very technical book with hard to follow instructions.I was looking for a book to help me model human forms better.. and well this book takes it too far imo. Like I said.. it's very technical and has a lot of reading.. I regret buying this book.. got it used.. but still not what I was after. It did get me into MUDBOX.. but that's about it.

Very useful and a very nice approach

From the Back Cover

Praise for THE BIG BOOK OF DASHBOARDS "The Big Book of Dashboards provides a solid treatment of the fundamentals of data visualization, but the numerous examples are what set this book apart. The comments from the authors after each chapter remind the reader that creating influential dashboards is both a science and an art. This book will spend more time on my desk than on my shelf—incredibly practical." —Jeffrey Camm, Inmar Presidential Chair, Associate Dean of Business Analytics, Wake Forest School of Business "Some books about visualization focus on principles and guidelines, but they don't devote enough pages to explain how to apply them to the design of complex, multi-section displays, like business dashboards. This book is the opposite of that. While the book contains an introduction to data visualization fundamentals, it is the numerous examples of real dashboards that sets it apart. If you've ever found yourself stuck when creating a dashboard, you will likely find a solution here." —Alberto Cairo, author of The Truthful Art: Data, Charts, and Maps for Communication "This book is full of beautiful dashboards along with uber-practical advice from three authors with many years of experience. It is a treasure chest for hardcore data-viz geeks and business leaders needing to get smart on how to present data to optimize operations." —J.D. Whitlock, VP, Enterprise Intelligence, Mercy Health "This book provides you with a vast array of real-world dashboards, and shares the thoughts and considerations that have gone into each example. The authors even provide a full explanation that acts as a user guide. Mix and match these ideas, and you'll find what you need to visualize your data." —Josh Tapley, Director of Data Visualization, Comcast Corporation "The artful combination of technique and problem solving come together in The Big Book of Dashboards as the authors demonstrate powerful design principles using real world use cases. Apply these principles to your next dashboard and watch your data come alive." —Bruce Henry, Managing Partner, False Peak Ventures

What an outstanding piece of work by Andy Cotgreave, Steve Wexler, and Jeffrey Shaffer in their recent release of The Big Book of Dashboards! I preordered being familiar with Andy's work and am not disappointed in the least. The first section of the book does a great job of summarizing for new visual analysts, while the remainder of the content is focused on real-world scenarios and practical examples people can use in their own unique environments. I often get asked the question, which charts do I use and will refer colleagues to this book as a resource for years to come. Many thanks for all the investment of your time and energy and kudos for a job well done!

I really enjoyed BBOD, and I am incorporating its many nuggets into my dashboards. Learning by example and counter-example is the best method (see Siegfried Engelmann fore more on that), and that's the format of this book. There are related webinars on the Tableau website that are definitely worth listening to.The thing to keep in mind about this book is that's it's not a step-by-step cookbook of how to technically achieve vizzes in Tableau. It's a book about design. It can quickly take you from making average, hum-drum (if not disorganized and confusing) dashboards to world-class material.Below are some thoughts on certain vizzes/chapters:· CH 2 and 20 - Course Metrics and Complaints - I would encourage Tableau to research gray text readability. Perhaps I have a genetic rod deficiency, or maybe it's because of my age, but I find the gray text to be hard to read. I think the effort to reduce contrast crosses a usability threshold. I'd like to see some tests of a type "solve a problem in this dashboard" with different gray scales in text. I'd wager darker equals a faster solution up to a certain point after which it doesn't matter. There are a lot of factors that contribute to this: monitor size, font size, bold, brightness, contrast, so you have to experiment with what works for you and the majority or your users.· CH 11 - Premier League Player Performance Metric. I think the applicability of this viz approach can be generalized even further to unit:subset:universe. For this football (soccer) viz, it's the most recent match, 5 next most recent, then all season. So the viz is by sets according to time. It could also be by organizational hierarchy as in employee: department: division for a fixed time period. In this same manner, Chapter 3 (speaker ratings) is conceptually equivalent, but it lacks the subset level. You could have speaker, topic area, and then all others. CH 12 - Rugby Dashboard - This is an interesting chapter. One option for a scoring viz us using Gantt Bars. t would be nice the book's dashboard were shaded between the lines to emphasize who is leading. I know this is a long-sought (by some) Tableau function, and maybe it's not too hard to implement if it's reimagined as a "Gantt Line", which would be identical to a Gantt Bar use case, except that it graphs lines while coloring the intermediate space. You can kinda do that with 3 levels of unstacked area charts... but not exactly.· CH 21 - Overall, I like the aesthetics of the Hospital Operating room dashboard, but I expected the screaming cat icon ("don't do this!") over the top of it. The calendar of the viz resembles the periodic table of elements, and the labels seem to be at odds with the "reduce clutter" guideline. The numbers are just a bit too much for me, but they could be exactly what the customer wanted in this case. Hey, chemists LIKE the periodic table! And some people don't want to hover for tooltip details, or they may have other motivations. I like to try to put myself in the shoes of the consumer and ask "Would the color itself be sufficient for me to make an actionable decision?" To me, the numbers don't have to be on the viz, and the calendars can be shrunken to show other information, but the dashboard isn't designed for me.Overall, this book is a "top shelf" selection on dashboard design that you can revisit over and over for best practices.

One of the authors, Steve Wexler and I worked together on a project that preceded this book and I was introduced to the wonder that is the scatter graph. Suddenly, our account teams had a powerful tool that could show clients how they compared to peers across similar metrics. Showing clients they fall in the lowest quartile among their peers proved to be a catalyst for productive business conversations and sales. And that's my favorite thing about this book, it is an imminently practical roadmap to getting beyond data in Excel spreadsheets and getting to stimulating conversations that can drive positive changes at work. I'm grateful to Steve and his co-authors for putting great examples into one book. If a picture is worth 1000 words, a revelatory data visualization is worth 5000. Enjoy the book and the conversations that will spring from it!

Great amount of content and detail for the price! Provides a lot of useful examples, and covers almost all the key visualizations used in business today. Not only does it go into the dashboards and visuals, but also dives deep into business scenarios so you get the full picture of what a particular choice of dashboard is trying to accomplish. Probably one of the best deals for a primer in building dashboards. There are definitely more advanced books out there, but you probably won't be needing those unless you're a data professional. Highly recommended buying this book!

The examples in this book are eye-opening in terms of giving you ideas on how to present your data. This is not a how-to book however (I didn't expect it to be) so don't expect instructions on how to build the samples. The dashboards appear to be mostly Tableau solutions... I'm not a Qlik user so I don't know if Qlik can duplicate these, and I think PowerBI is another year away from duplicating the most complex features. Since the authors are trying to give you concepts rather than instructions that's not really a major issue but reliance on a single reporting tool keeps it from being a 5-star review for me. But absolutely buy it, because the visualizations are going to be useful to you in whatever tool you end up using.

I highly recommend for anyone that creates data visualizations. Very detailed book on what to do and not to do for dashboards. It still gives examples for bad dashboards though if your boss/upper management are set in their old ways of pie charts and many colors.

I heard about this book from Andy Cotgreave at TC16, and preordered it as soon as I was able to. I am happy I did.If you are responsible for creating visualizations, particularly in Tableau, this book is a must-have. Consider it a paperback muse, since while it doesn't offer step-by-step instructions and may not include your exact use case, a casual flip through the pages will give you ideas for views you'd never have thought of otherwise. A great idea and great execution by some of the industry's sharpest minds. Well done!
