The foundation for this book is grounded in the person of Robert K. Greenleaf who is the father of Servant Leadership Theory. Back in 1970, he wrote a small essay called “The Servant As Leader”, which introduced the term “servant-leadership.” That and other writings have influenced an entire generation of management experts and institutional leaders. Bob Greenleaf (1904-1990) spent his first career in management research, development and education at AT&T. After retirement, he began a second career teaching and consulting at institutions ranging from Harvard Business School to the Ford Foundation to scores of churches and not-for-profit institutions. During the tumultuous 1960s, Greenleaf tried to understand why so many young people were in rebellion against America’s institutions, especially universities. He concluded that the fault lay with the institutions: they weren’t doing a good job of serving; therefore, they were doing a poor job of leading.In 1970, Greenleaf wrote “The Servant as Leader”, a powerful little essay that continues to gain influence today. How some individuals are comforted by long-held, elaborate physical or spirituals rituals, or how many are relieved to be free of the burden of the shell, or may even be frightened in its presence.With Doughty’s voice and the influence of her and writers like her, there is a chance in our lifetimes to clear our psyches and sense of obligation, and to think clearly: What do I want? What do I want for my loved ones? It is not necessary, it is not more hygienic, meaningful or respectful to continue with the traditional American ways of death or burial. There are many paths and it’s OK.

While her first book, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, was a collection of personal stories from Caitlin, From Here to Eternity is a story of others. In this book we learn about death culture from all over the world, as well as here in the United States. If you have watched any of her YouTube videos, you will know what to expect from this book. The book reads like watching one of her videos. I appreciate in depth look at all the culture surrounding death in various locations, and learning what options are available in different localities. This is over all a light hearted look at death, that can cause some serious introspection. Thank you for sharing your journeys with us Caitlin!

'From Here to Eternity' is a very interesting look at the various death practices of different societies or subcultures throughout the world. It is by no means exhaustive, but gives the reader a sample of what types of ways that death is handled. My only criticism is that it reads like a series of individual chapters / vignettes and lacks somewhat of a cohesiveness that an overall examination would possess. I often was looking for ways to link the chapters beyond the overarching topic of death, and I couldn't find it. It might have been interesting to understand why the author chose the locations she did, in what order, and how she moved from one to another (other than via air travel).Overall, a really neat book well worth the read. I am looking forward to more books by this author!

I love this author and I enjoy her videos on You Tube. This books exams death practices in different parts of the world in a compassionate manner. She is really teaching us, with her humor, intelligence and her gift for telling story telling skills, to be more open and comfortable about the dying process and alternative ways to plan a funeral. She has really opened my eyes about the funeral industry and unnecessary costs. I enjoyed her first book as well.

Finished within a day of receiving it because I did not want to put it down! The writing style is fun and attention keeping while still maintaining composure. As for the content, this was a great exploration into different cultures. This is a great book to introduce oneself to multiple cultures and to a variety of aspects in the global community surrounding death. A great read that I would highly recommend!

This is a book every person who has a fear of death or those not dealing with death should read. This book is helpful in getting you into understanding not only the finality of death but how we & others deal with it.As a true believer of DENIAL *not just a river in Egypt*, this book, as well as Caitlin Doughty's other book "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", are invaluable learning tools. How interesting to learn about death rituals in other societies.The death practices that Americans see as "normal" versus those other cultures view as "normal" highlights just how unique each culture truly is. From the high-tech to the hands-on this book takes a look at many different customs and beliefs that are deeply meaningful to those involved, regardless of how strange they may seem to us. I love Caitlin's honest and quirky style and can hear her voice in the pages of her book. I've been following her "Ask a Mortician" YouTube series for several years and read When Smoke Gets in Your Eyes on the day it was released. I love it all! Through her hard work, dedication and encouragement of honest conversation, she is spearheading a movement in America to change the way things are "normally" done, explaining there is a healthier, better, more meaningful, MUCH more affordable way to deal with the inevitability of death and how we handle things before, during and after. This is a great read and gives such interesting insight to the world around us.

Another winner from my new favorite author! This one is rich in culture, and makes me a little jealous that these rituals have passed us for whatever reason. Love the Graham theft Parsons reference. One of my favorite movies, I secretly wish when I go that my friends would do.Thanks for another book that makes death less scary.

My little guy has been having trouble lifting off. These books have helped him in his learning to read journey significantly. We bought 5 sets and every day we read a box full. Reading one box a couple of days in a row to begin with helped (nice to feel confident, since he did just read them the day before). There are a few sentences that would be more natural written another way and before we're done I will have added a few things to them. The illustrations are nice and the repetition helps with memorizing the words. Would highly recommend this books to teach reading. The added story cards to this set are nice! My son likes to make up his own nonsensical stories when he's finished reading the books.

I bought these for my 5 year-old who really struggles with confidence in the reading department. Everything was hard for her and she became afraid to even try to learn and decode sight words. These books were a game changer! Knowing that she could read a WHOLE BOOK with minimal or no help gave her the confidence boost that she needed in order to begin decoding sight words at school, and in a very short period of time. I cannot put into words how grateful I am that a teacher-friend recommend them to us. It seriously may have made the difference in whether or not we repeated Kindergarten and it made her love learning to read.

This is a good start to reading. As an adult you may look at them and think "There is no real story here" or "This seems a bit too simplistic" but when your young reader is just starting to sound out words these books are great. They can work their way through the words one by one if necessary and the books are short enough that its not an insurmountable task.I suggest getting all three series that go together for the age/grade.BOB Books:First StoriesBeginning ReadersSight Words: Kindergarten

After spending an entire school year in kindergarten my son was still having issues with his sight words. That is when I decided to buy the BOB book series. My son enjoys sitting down to read his books every night. He actually brings them to me and asks if he can read now. As a mom that was worried about retention this is a huge plus.I think it may already be time to buy the next sets in the series. As long as they are as good as this set we will be a forever BOB customer.

During our reading time, I had a hard time to get my son's attention on the words of books. Most of the time he only liked to focus on the colorful pictures and scanned quickly at the word lines. So it's difficult to teach him reading and remember even the simple words. I gave Bob books a try and so glad that I picked it, since now the little boy has really focused on the words and learned them quickly, yay! The simple drawing of the books are intentional to withdraw the little ones' attention from the animated pictures, that's the main point. The only thing need to be improved is the connection between the word and the pictures. Sometimes my son can guess it based on the pictures like dog, cat, bird, bug without really learning the words. But it's helpful and effective to learn sigh words. I would strongly recommend these books for the very beginning reader to build up their confidence in reading.

Man oh man does my son LOVE reading these! He feels soooo proud of himself when he can pick up a book and read it from front to back. Best part was watching him do it with my mom ;-) Could it get to be too simple in a few more months? Sure....but he's already reading then, isn't he??

My son loves these so much he just pulls them out on his own. He loves that he's learning these words in class and gets excited when he is able to read them. This boosts his self-esteem and gets him excited about reading. Which is what we want! :) Cute little stories too.

She won the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award twice in her career, once for Urusei Yatsura in 1981 and the second time for Inuyasha in 2002. A majority of the Takahashi canon has been adapted into other media such as anime, live-action TV series, and film. First, I want to start out with saying if you don't get a hardcopy of the book and get the Kindle edition you're going to be disappointed. Much of why we love the Shadowhunter's world and Cassandra's writing is because of the small details and touches that she puts into her work. I had read the series when it first came out between my middle school and high school years and, to be in college now it was great to see the TV series on Freeform. Though I had a bit of early confusion, as I remembered the characters and storyline but the details of her mythological world had been faded to me. The codex serves as a great reference and collectable to those who adore the series and the hardcopy is beautifully crafted. The hardcover copy has an embellished cover that has 3D detailing and a very unique look to it. The inside is neatly broken down and holds the same terminology and even images for some of the content to really showcase the fantasy world even more. There are some little 'notes' that look handwritten as if done by Jace and Clary and are a great touch to the overall book. If you get a Kindle edition instead of a hardcopy, you miss out on the effects of the notes and the overall craftsmanship that makes it such a neat book as it all becomes the same format text and lacks in many of the details.

This is a fun addition to my collection of Shadowhunter books. There are a lot of interesting details within this little book. Most of the information is at least touched on during Clare's two series, but I think it is really interesting to have an entire book dedicated to the world she created. It doesn't hurt the book fits in with my other book.There are little hints and nods to The Infernal Devices while Clary , Jace and Simon, from the Mortal Instruments, "comment" in the margins. There is a lot of information packed into this little books. There are sections that are boring, but not every section on a textbook/handbook can be interesting! It raises the believability just a bit.I think the little book gives a nice glimpse into the Shadowhunter world and the Clave mentality that we don't always see from the characters within the series. The "comments" from our favorite characters contrast to the message from the Clave as well. Overall it is just a lot of fun that doesn't take itself too seriously.

I hadn’t intended to read this right now; I have so many other books I need to read. However, it was one of those times where you think you’ll just leaf through a page or two and the next thing you know, it’s three hours later and you’re half way through the book. Cassandra Clare’s world is totally captivating and I REALLY want to just sit and marathon my way through the rest of the Mortal Instruments series (I’ve only read the first book, City of Bones) but I have other books I must read and review first. The Shadowhunter’s Codex provides background information to the two series. I have seen some very minor spoilers in there – for example, I didn’t know about Simon’s status – but nothing that would spoil the series.Although I am an advocate of ebooks, this is one book I would strongly recommend buying in hardback format. Part of the fun of the book are Clary’s and Simon’s in-world notes in the margin of this Shadowhunter’s training manual. In the hardback format, this is represented by what look like handwritten scribbles. This has had to be translated into different fonts in the ebook and the formatting is often not quite accurate, leading to some confusion.

Gift for my daughter who has read the Shadowhunter books and she LOOOVES it. She read for almost 2 hours last night and has almost finished it. She says it is great for additional info about the characters and even cross references with other series by the author. Good purchase for any shadow hunter fan.

I love the Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments. This book provided me with a lot of insight into the Shadowhunter world. It set up just like it should be for the real characters. It has beautiful illustrations and I really enjoyed reading the notes written by "Simon", "Clary", and "Jace". I also enjoyed the parts at the end of the chapters where you could write your own answers. My favorite parts in the book were when they had a list of names that you could combine to create your own Shadowhunter last name and the rune section where they drew them all out. I also like the weapons *evil grin*. If you like Cassandra Clare and her books, this is the thing for you. It is also good to have read this before you start her new series (Last Hours).

only buy if you're a shadowhunter fan who really wants to know every piece of cannon. It reads like what its a manual and goes over things most readers already know.the origins stories are great are the illustrations and the notes scribbled on the margins, by Clary, Jace, and Simon, I think the reader is meant to believe the codex is passed around and used and reused.

"Power Wars: Inside Obama’s Post 9/11 Presidency" is special to me for two selfish reasons: 1) I am Barack’s sixth cousin once removed and 2) I went to high school with author Charlie Savage, a news-loving track and cross country runner.My first point means nothing. I will never meet my Nobel Peace Prize-winning relative, Barack Obama. Yet I squirmed at Savage’s unflinching portrait that pursued truth above Camelot fantasy. My second point means everything. As a teenage athlete, Savage had stamina covering uncomfortable and often uncelebrated distances. (In Indiana, glory beamed on basketball players, less on guys running in the rain). As editor of the school paper, his diligence garnered city-wide attention as he churned out articles on controversial topics, including race relations in our own cafeteria. Power Wars is a 698-page volume that proves Savage is the same young man I knew back in Fort Wayne, Ind.In relentless detail, mile by mile, Savage documented a turning point of the Obama Administration -- Christmas Day 2009 -- when Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab boarded Flight 253 to Detroit and injected chemicals into a compound bomb hidden in his underwear. Abdulmutallab was almost successful in his attempt to kill passengers and martyr himself in an act of jihad. Instead, his crime increased already high levels of paranoia.While Obama criticized his predecessor’s global war on terror, his administration often strengthened Bush policies and made them legal. Savage wrote: “If the Bush years can be caricatured as government by cowboy, energetic but shooting from the hip, the Obama era was government by lawyer, methodical and precise -- sometimes to a fault.” In Chapter 3, “Acting Like Bush,” Savage added that Obama was no dove and never had been. He believed the war on terrorism was real, not a metaphor like the war on drugs. Obama promoted transparency. Meanwhile, his Justice Department blocked pending lawsuits on CIA torture and the NSA’s warrantless surveillance program.No one has ever gotten into the weeds like Savage. Piecing together recently revealed information and his own new reporting, Savage used Chapter 5: Stellarwind (Surveillance 1928-2008) and Chapter 11: Institutionalized (Surveillance 2009-2015) to form “the first coherent public history of American surveillance policy in the contemporary era.” Of note to me was Stellarwind, a program developed October 2001 to mine the phone and email communications of American civilians. The Obama team’s decision, to maintain Stellarwind and other classified programs, hinged on older practices that had grown for decades. Savage wrote in Chapter 11 that Obama and his advisors valued such surveillance and bulk data collection, as long as it didn’t violate FISA: “There were no troops dying on the ground, no drones killing civilian bystanders, and no spectacle of prisoners being held without trial. Where Obama battled conservatives over policy goals like closing the prison at Guantanamo, he battled liberals by defending the surveillance programs from legal scrutiny.”Savage was best in his coverage of Guantanamo, a symbol of our never-ending war against terror. Having visited in 2003 and again in 2014, he noted “pervasive rust holes in the walls and ceiling of the ragingly hot kitchen building where meals for both detainees and guards were prepared, through which sunlight shone.” He wrote: “It was now costing taxpayers some three million dollars per prisoner each year to house the remaining detainees at Guantanamo. By comparison, it costs about thirty thousand dollars a year to house an inmate in a domestic maximum-security prison.”His Boston Globe coverage of Presidential Signing Statements, won him the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. But after reading "Power Wars," I appreciate personal miles he briefly described in the Acknowledgements, as a husband and father. The book is dedicated to his young sons, William and Peter, in an effort “to explain a crucial chapter in the shaping of the nation, and the world, that you will inherit.”

Great! i know I should've waited for the paperback edition. You know when you buy a DVD version of a movie, it sometimes comes out in Blu-Ray with an extended edition with more commentary and docs about the making of the film. Well, in this case, the original hardback of Power Wars was brilliant and highly informative of the Obama administration. BUT Where's the index? Oh, you need to go online to find it and the link is listed at the back of the book. So, if you want to look up a topic, you need to go to the site. Then of course, because it was published in 2015, it naturally leaves off the rest of Obama's term but theorizes what would be the future at this time and how the next administration would fare. No one ever expected or even considered that Trump would be the leader, post-Obama. This book stresses how Obama was able to run the country well post-G.W. Bush and post 9-11, after facing an unbelievable task. Anyway, back to the paper edition, it DOES clearly contain an index and brings the narrative of the Obama administration up-to-date. But now I have to buy this newer updated, revised edition after shelling out almost $30 for the hardcover.

I have found this book both thorough and interesting. It gives one a first hand look at the inside legal churn that has taken place in the Obama administration, primarily regarding secrets, prisoners and detentions. Lots of people and lots of meetings where the legal underpinnings of potential policies are formulated. Not much look at Barack Obama himself, yet his intentions and values are the key to much of what takes place.The author comes across as fair minded and certainly insightful from time to time. I've no negative comments, just a warning to readers that the book is detailed and there are many, many specific players involved. The writing is good, the book is not dull.

In this book Charlie Savage updates the 'imperial presidency' literature inspired by the George W Bush administration. The Obama administration came in planning to change the US approach to the war on terror - to close Guantanamo Bay, to foreclose the use of torture, to ground American actions in statute rather than in presidential prerogative. But the attempted attack on a Detroit-bound aircraft at Christmas 2009 - by the "underwear bomber" - raised both the substantive and (especially) the political stakes. Savage provides a topical approach to the legal questions involved in crucial national security decisions: e.g., to expand the program of drone warfare (and to use drones to kill American citizens abroad); to expand surveillance (as discussed by the Snowden revelations); to implement a revised detention regime for "enemy combatants," continuing the use of military tribunals; to fight the 2011 NATO war in Libya while ruling out the applicability of the War Powers Resolution. The book is focused on Obama but necessarily must dive back into history. In so doing, it provides what may be a uniquely cogent history of the recent development of the national security state. The two-chapter recounting of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and its application since 1978, for instance, neatly disentangles what is often a hugely confusing story.The book is intensely substantive, then, but very readable. And it raises a key question: if the Obama administration's lawyers are willing to tell the president that anything he wants to do is legal, is that just presidential prerogative by another name?
