Review

"Like one of Jesus' parables, Exit 36 avoids moral lessons or easy answers. Instead, Robert Farrar Capon explores suicide, adultery, and the general failures that beset both the characters in this novel and all of us with them. And he does it without moral outrage or shoulder-shrugging apathy. Instead, Capon looks directly at the agony of a fallen world through the mystery of the reconciliation of everything and everybody in Christ. Whatever scandals one might find in this book, however, the scandal of grace through the death and resurrection of Jesus triumphs over it all. Capon's voice is needed now as much as it ever has been."--The Very Revd Mark Strobel, Dean, Gethsemane Cathedral Fargo"Running parallel to the good old-fashioned mystery is a long look at our deepest anxieties about death, sin, forgiveness when forgiveness is outrageous and impossible, and love. The romance of love is dealt with unabashedly. But the humanity of love - the Jesus who lives in us all and frees us from sin - is revealed by our narrator's own searching thoughts, bold self-examination, frank dialogue with parishioners and quietly stunning acts of compassion."--Laura E. Bondarchuk, East Marion, NY

Loved the book. I've collected Capon where I could over the years, so it was great to see this book and a few other back in print, like Bed and Board and More Theology and Less Heavy Cream. Capon is hyperbolic when it comes to grace...except grace isn't something we can exaggerate. It's far more amazing than we can imagine...hence, why it's called Good News. When I think of Capon, I think of what Doug WIlson wrote in his book, 9 Writers to Read in a chapter devoted to Capon, "There are just a handful of writers who can edify you while simultaneously exasperating you, but Capon is in that number. God bless him." God bless him, indeed.

Exit 36 is a book about a pastor who committed suicide after he couldn't get out the web of his many affairs. The narrator of the book is his colleague pastor who learns of one of the affairs when a mistress comes to speak to the pastor. Instead of leading her to healing through confession and absolution, he begins a discourse of Episcopalian philosophical poppycock where he speculates whether adultery is wrong or not. He furthers this idea through the book but proposing that heaven is limitless orgy without restriction which he concludes because in heaven there is no marriage or giving in marriage but since we are resurrected with our members then by hedonistic conclusion, it must mean heaven is some sexual euphoria. Truth is not measured by a single Bible verse in the book. Instead a woman “wisdom giver” judges the pastor’s developing doctrine. He tries to console the widow and the mistress with some animistic belief that Ted (the pastor who committed suicide) still lives through those who remain on earth. Then he has the twisted idea that God could be using sex with the widow and the mistress could be the way God is using to draw him in and “minister” to the grieving.Reconciliation for the author does not mention confession of sins, only accepting Jesus and repeating Jesus over and over again. Don’t get me wrong, Jesus is the one who paid the price for our salvation, 100%. He did it by paying for the sins of the world by dying on the cross for our sins, so that we are forgiven. This book pushes the idea that grace abounds without confession of sins and without mentioning how painful sin hurts others, but it does. The daughter of the mistress gave a scant look at the “new” pastor who comes visiting. But then her opinion and hurt is not mentioned. He compliments her art which is kind thus no need to further her part in the story. Separation of her parents and her father leaving are not mentioned. The children of the mother and cheating pastor are not mentioned.I do believe all sins can be forgiven but I cannot promote a book that suggests that sin and the Law do not matter. Our transgressions hurt and damage others. We need daily repentance, forgiveness, and healing. We need the Holy Spirit to work in our lives to fight against sin. We cannot and should not remove the Law. It shows us our sins and our need for a Savior. It also shows us what a sanctified life is and why we need the Word of God and the Holy Spirit to lead us in sanctified lives that care for others and protect families.

There is very little to like about Exit 36. It’s principal characters are a mess. It’s narrator is a sorry excuse for a priest—an overly verbose, self-interested schmuck, really. (An earlier 1-star reviewer really hit that nail on the head!) Just about everyone you run into is a moral letdown, and the author seems intent on letting them get away with it! Per usual, I found Capon insufferable. He pressed every button I have... Oh, the speculative theology, the untenable ethics, the liquor and the innuendo. None of it flies! But as we learn, when nothing else has wings, one bird does: “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. Period. Period. Period.”If you want a book to walk you to the edge of the plank and push you into the chaotic, life-smothering deep, this is it. Capon’s the man to hold your head under water just long enough to find some fresh air down there. He was, after all, one of the lamed-vovniks. “Come on in. The water’s fine.”
