Dr. Shannon Trice-Black has been a school counselor for over 10 years and continues to maintain a small part-time counseling practice, working with children, adolescents, and adults. Shannon has presented her work and writings on classroom guidance, bullying, and relational aggression at conferences, workshops, and master s level classes. She serves on the board of the Jefferson Counseling Association and the Virginia Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. In addition, Shannon is a member of the Virginia Counselors Association, Virginia School Counselors Association, and American Counseling Association. Julia V. Taylor was a school counselor for Wake County Public Schools in Raleigh, North Carolina. Julia is a nationally recognized public speaker and frequently presents her research on relational aggression to educators at conferences, county and district in-services, and various workshops. She is the Professional Interest Network Bullying Specialist for the American School Counselor Association and serves on the North Carolina School Counselor Association Board as the middle school vice president. In addition to speaking to professionals, Julia frequently educates children, teens, and parents in local communities about relational aggression, body image, and other adolescent/teen issues. This is a great intervention program for girls in the school. The lessons need to be adapted to the time frame of an actual school day as there just is not enough time to do multiple activities in one session, but the girls LOVED this group. I will use it over and over. I also enjoyed all of the printable materials and resources. It is a well thought out program and it is a great package.
I am a school counselor at an elementary school grade K-5. I have several friendship/social skills groups and this book is amazing! Love that it has a cd to print the papers you will need. Get this book for your resources its a must have!
I wanted something that would make running groups more fun for me and for my students, but I found this book is not always going to be a click, print, and run to your group. Some of the activities require a little prep, or materials you might not find readily available. So always be a day ahead of yourself. My students were always excited to see what we doing for the week!
I had bought the Girls in Real Life Situations book for 6th grade and up and LOVED it. I decided to buy this one for younger grades. There are not as many exercises/activities in this one, but there are a lot of handouts , such as, word finds. This book is still handy and I have used a lot of the activities inside of it. Both of these books have been, hands down, the best group activity books I have ever purchased. They are realistic in regards to time, materials, finances, etc.
The lessons seemed unoriginal to me. I wasn’t impressed.
I purchased this book to help facilitate a fifth grade girls group who were struggling with friendship issues, aggressiveness, and cliques. I use some of the activities in the book to help start conversation, but I found some of the activities to be shallow and geared toward a younger crowd (perhaps third or fourth grade). However, the book is categorized into different aspects of development and does offer some good suggestions to build cohesiveness within the group.
Highly recommended for counseling girl groups. The girls responded very well and look forward to attending girls group weekly. The book has wonderful ideas and tips for parents as well. It was a great buy.
I was introduced to this product by another professional. It had just the activities I was looking for when working with girls. I would highly recommend it.
