I bought this for a niece after I read it (I'm 43y/o). I'm so impressed with these two young ladies. Wow, their journey and their authorship is inspirational. I want to volunteer with Girls Who Code because of this story. Check it out from your library, buy it, or borrow it....just read it! You don't have to be a computer geek or have a penchant for computers. It's about girls working together, learning a new skill and increasing their self-esteem. I'm so glad I read this book!

A must read for young girls and their parents too! These young women share insights into the tech world, but this book offers so much more - from raising awareness of important social issues to wrestling with anxiety about your own self-worth and the personal growth that comes from getting out of your comfort zone.

This book is NOT only for people interested in coding/tech!!Andy and Sophie do a wonderful job sharing the vulnerability they felt before starting new journeys and during the craziness of Tampon Run. I enjoyed how the book addressed all the self-messages we give ourselves that restrict us from trying new or hard tasks. Their gaming journey is, of course, restricted to the tech world, but the journey could easily have been written about any other field a child passionately wants to enter: putting yourself out there is hard, and if you want to succeed, you'll have to feel uncomfortable and scared sometimes.NOTE: If you are a homeschooling parent, particularly an unschooling parent, this book is a must read! It shows: How finding a passion and following it is very rewarding and inspiriting. How high school is a limited view of the world/there is so much more than grades. How trying is always better than not trying.

I took web and digital design classes in high school, but the web design class kinda devolved into a business class once the teacher left to teach math and her husband took over. We didn’t learn much about websites and coding after that.Thankfully, Gonzales and Houser didn’t have teachers like that and were able to create the fabulous little game that is Tampon Run. Girl Code is Gonzales and Houser taking us through how the game came about and the aftermath of their viral fame. Whether you’re a STEM girl or firmly on the English/History team like I am, these girls are pretty inspiring!The linear structure of Girl Code tracks their journey from everygirls to viral stars from start to finish to epilogue: Sophie got into coding to get over her anxiety about speaking and find a new language in which to express herself; Andy was interested in coding from a young age and took it as one of her interests even while listening to her Filipino family’s “doctor, lawyer, engineer” motto for her future. Their paths collided when they attended the same Girls Who Code summer program in the summer of 2014 and decided to partner up for their final project.Beyond informing me that the incredible original title of Tampon Run was Texas Tampon Massacre and the game was inspired by a Huffington Post article about an abortion vote, the girls take you step-by-step through how it came together as though they’d kept very precise diaries about the process. (To be fair, Sophie did. She keeps a personal diary.) Even when the tech talk got more advanced than rudimentary little me could understand, I stuck to it. Anyone without knowledge of coding games won’t be able to replicate their work very easily, but they’ll understand what the girls are doing and that’s the important part.The game, once they decided to release the full product online, didn’t go viral solely by chance either. The girls smartly used social media to its fullest by tweeting the link out, posting about the game on Reddit, etc. Marketing: it ain’t always fun, but you don’t get anywhere without it. Girl Code takes us through what it was like to be in the international spotlight and, even better, what they’ve done since those fifteen minutes of viral fame died down. Sophie is pursuing entrepreneurial paths to eventually create her own start-up and give back the same way people gave to her; Andy is sticking with coding.Oh, and the girls explicitly call out the tech nightmare Gamergate movement as just a tiny, big-mouthed group of cyberbullies. 1000% AGREE, WOULD SCREAM INTO A MEGAPHONE.In general, the book is very positive about the future of women in tech industries, but it doesn’t address the cultural issues so few women stay in STEM programs and later enter STEM professions. Y’know, rampant sexism and classmates who make them so miserable they bail. To be entirely fair, this wasn’t something I exected the book to address. If they’ve experienced that toxic tech atmosphere besides the cringeworthy radio interview they write about, they didn’t make mention of it or detail it at length.My strongest criticism is reserved for the book’s prose. Though accessible, it’s also pretty rough and my thoughts wandered away from the text easily thanks to the basic “we did this, we did that, we felt like this” way the girls write. Nonfiction books can have engaging writing that goes beyond that and it’s clear Gonzales and Houser are not top-notch writers. Though it makes reading this short little book take a little longer, that’s still not a deal-breaker.Gonzales and Houser’s incredible accomplishment and their determination to one day give back to women in STEM is inspiring and will make its readers want to go out and create after they read Girl Code. Video games, writing, paintings, a scholarly article about how this one historical figure was definitely gay–there are no limits on who this book will spark inspiration in. For instance, the original title Texas Tampon Massacre gave me an idea for a short story and I want to work as hard on that as the authors worked on their game.

The message of this book was great and inspiring, and I really loved the idea of Tampon Run. Don't worry about it being too techy—it definitely wasn't. The end of the book has some cool coding exercises, definitions, etc. If you are interested in that part, a printed book might be better than an ebook. Even on my smallest font size, I had trouble getting an entire page to show up sometimes on my Kindle.

I was very curious about this book when I saw it in the library's new book section. I learned to program back when the personal computer was invented. I found the book a very good read and very interesting. I enjoyed the coding section at the end. In this day and time it is probably not a bad idea for everyone to learn a little about coding.

This written in a way that is like advice for the guy the next slip over. Dave Gerr a naval architect and while some of the knowledge is technical, it is presented in an easy to understand format and personal. One of the great strengths of the book is most chapters are a story, relating some personal experience, problems encountered and how he solved or attempted to solve them. Each chapter is short and it's lesson will not bore you.The chapters are un-related so each stands on it's own; for that reason alone it is hard to review the Nature of Boats. I do know that every night I picked it up and read a chapter or three and found my knowledge expanded in a light-hearted way.

One of my favorites on its admittedly esoteric subject. Tells a payment--presumably a boat owner or buyer--what he/she might like to know that a naval architect knows about the engineering aspects of boat design.

If my wife read this book, she would divorce me instantly, as she would understand why a Nautically Obsessed person will never change, and will get worse as time goes by.....Honestly, this book made me realize there are others like me that can't stop thinking about boats and the ocean! It feeds the fire burning in your soul and loads you up with all kinds of facts, concepts, and the author's experience to send you off to the drawing board, the boat show, or maybe West Marine. Great writing and a flow of information that will make you not want to let it down until you've committed to memory. While you're at it, get "Elements of Boat Strength" also. Highly recommended!

If you are interested in going long far afield of your home base, under power, you should also read Voyaging Under Power by Captain Robert Beebe.

I wanted to understand boats, not just know about them.Dave Kerr gets to the heart of the matter in this volume. 2018 was a ROUGH year for me. One bright spark of joy was...the Queer Eye show on Netflix! I've been a Jonathan Van Ness fan FOREVER so I was ecstatic to see that he was cast on the show. I immediately fell in love with the entire Fab Five team. The show was truly a ray of hope, joy, and optimism in the midst of a very tough time. When I saw that they had a book...I flipped out! I don't think I've ever rushed over to Amazon so fast! The book is beautiful. I love reading a few pages every morning while drinking coffee. It inspires me to be kinder to myself and take better care of myself all day long. Bravo to everyone who helped produce this book! OK, now I need to go jade roller my face just like Jonathan instructs.

This has already been an incredible gift for my friends, coworkers, and family members who are big Queer Eye fans! I love seeing the Fab 5 expand into another medium. Can't recommend this enough!

I can’t sing enough praises for this book. It gives you the story’s of what makes all the fab 5 who they are, and then gives you advice that’s general enough that you can apply it to yourself as if you’re on the show. But specific enough that it kinda does feel like they’re actually just talking to you. This book is absolutely full of character and a must have for a fan of Queer Eye.

The queer eye 5 are fabulous all around so after watching the Netflix seasons and seeing this book come out I ordered without hesitation.

This book is full of love and joyous spirit! If you enjoy life and encouraging others to embrace their awesomeness then this book would make a great gift for anyone special in your life.

We love the TV show so we gave this to my daughter in Brooklyn as a gift!

And he proceeds to effloresce a wondrous garden wrought of the print medium brimming over with fresh probes, "osmic space," brains "astonied," the secret lives of "sense ratios," and other electrific, outsized insights and invitations into the futurepresent. One could readily argue and effectively so that "The Global Village..." is indeed a worthy extension of the medium of Professor McLuhan himself, ringing true and resonating orchestrally with the spirit and vivacity of that bright, iridescent, warm and radiant bulb which, tragically, went out suddenly and left us in darkness on New Year's Eve, 1980.Feed forward 9 years. Powers'/McLuhan's "tetrad" is a mesmerizingly rich metaphor lending clarity and intensity to McLuhan's seminal 1964 probicon, "Understanding Media--The Extensions of Man." This "new" 1989 book is a MUST-read, a reverent continuance of McLuhan's oeuvre, a virtual channeling of his spirit, and in various ways easier to grasp perhaps, more accessible even, than the monumentally revolutionary/visionary UMTEOM.The beauty of McLuhan and by protraction Dr. Bruce Powers here is that these men are not pedants but facilitators. Their goal, much like that of Carl Rogers or George B. Leonard or Joseph Campbell, is not to pound stuff into brainpans, but to gently yet insistently open up minds to possibilities, perils, challenges, potentialities and joys imperative in the present reality/"reelity?" or whatever one wishes to term the agardish within which each of us swims, breathes, eats, creates, dances, defecates, procreates and seethes.If McLuhan is the sorcerer, Bruce Powers is his worthy apprentice, now successor. In fact he veritably invites all of us to be successors (McLuhanatics?), to become involved (the essential definition of "cool"). This book is exciting, invigorating, pulsating, intensely involving and above all, highly rewarding. We need more extensions of McLuhan like this one. This is a superb nonbook, a hybrid medium, and a seamless read. TGV will get your probing juices flowing. It's as revitalizing as pure MDMA (as far as "the mdma is the message" goes). Buy this deceptively modest paperback, and step into it like a hot bath.

To be fair to the review which finds this a shameless misrepresentation, some of McLuhan's best works are OUT OF PRINT, 'From Cliche To Archetype', and 'Through the Vanishing Point.' McLuhan liked these collaborations, and take each one for what it is. The Tetrad is an amazing concept, and the 'Laws of Media' has a chapter on Tetrads. I like to wonder what McLuhan would have said about the 'mass audience', and to follow through on the basic concept of the book, note the US Birth Rate is dropping, and he might have said "Because the world is getting smaller!" While the global economy 'reverses' into non-money, credit, and bitcoin offers us electronic barter, the Tetrad provides answers. Does living in a Global Village mean we all return to live in primitive huts? Perhaps, but if so, we'll have a GPS to tell us where the Lion is. So enjoy the fun the future belongs to the forward thinking.

I'm surprised this travesty is still in print. "Not in McLuhan's style" is a kind understatement; Powers demonstrates flagrant misunderstanding and confusion of basic McLuhanesque ideas. Try 'Laws of Media' or 'Understanding Electric Language' instead.

Grey Villet beautifully captured the Lovings' story for all of the world to see. These two people, who simply wanted the freedom to love one another, became American heroes by courageously standing for what was right, deemed by God, and blessed by the Almighty as well. Each image shows the reverence they held for each other. Their love, respect and admiration was brilliantly illuminated in every gaze, every touch, every image. What an extraordinary gift - to be loved and to love like that!

Life is difficult without the ugliness of others getting in the mix. Two loving humans making the best out of their lives. Great book. Thank you.

In 1959 a couple with different skin pigments get married. Turns out that in their home state of Virginia it is illegal and the get arrested. I think this book will be very helpful for the health concious people. The recipes are very simple so that anyone can cook delicious and hygenic foods at his own.Focuses are given for every formula so you know precisely where you stand.I've had companions over and they no thought that their dinners are bring down in calories by any stretch of the imagination.

We've been trying recipes from this for several days now and everything we try comes out great. Recipes are simple and many required ingredients already in my kitchen. This cookbook is recommended to anyone interested in cooking easy healthy meals. It will be the best book in 2019.

The first chapter is breakfast recipes and the first listed recipe is "Stuffed Baked Potatoes". The first four recipes are clearly dinner recipes. The back of the book list 14 recipe titles and not one of those recipes is in the book. I don't believe that the Freestyle point calculation is correct on many of the recipes. Also not that it is necessary, but it sure does help....there are ZERO pictures of the recipes in this book. In my opinion not worth the money.

This book has a pack of extraordinary recipes that anybody will appreciate. It doesn't appear as though it is diet sustenance. The meals are simple, don't include outlandish ingredients. I love this cookbook.
