Marion Winik’s The Baltimore Book of the Dead is wonderful, wise, and compelling, read. It’s a straightforward, philosophical, insightful (and sometimes funny/playful) book.I also agree with what Winik says in her introduction. "Death is the subtext of life...the foundation of life's meaning and value." In addition, as she points out, we're shaped as much--maybe even more--by those who've died as we are by those who are still living.I couldn't put it down. Winik’s narrator/persona kept me engaged from minute one. And the haunting moods in this book reminded me of Our Town, Spoon River Anthology, and Winesburg Ohio. -- Mike Steinberg

Clever, moving, and surprising. Winik captures an essence of the departed leaving a strong impression of each. A masterclass in short form and a wonderful read.
This book showcases Winik's mastery of the written word. She is able to say so much in under 400 words per entry. I hope a third Book of the Dead will follow in another ten years.
For a book about the dead, the writing and the people portrayed are lively, upbeat, sympathetic, and interesting.
Loved this book. Poetic silhouettes of people gone. Having left their imprint on Marion Winik, she brings them to us with the truth and beauty of their lives and her writing. It is really a wonderful sequel to her book Glen Rock Book of the Dead.
