I read this years ago right after graduating from high school. This book was a life changer for me. I was heavily indoctrinated in the Catholic church and felt that by even reading this book and daring to speculate about its contents that the church roof would fall in on my head the next time I went to church. Although it was close to heresy for me to read about the early formation of the church, the good news is that I'm still here! The roof did not cave in on me and I continue to be fascinated with the line between historical, man-made doctrine and what went into the Bible as we know it now. Gnostic gospels takes the nag hammadi (sp) scrolls and shows that there were many gospels around the time of Christ. The fact that these gospels were jarred up and buried shows that they were not the favored gospels and possession was tantamount to death. Why were they different? Is it because these gospels talked about finding God within instead of using the priestly class as intermediaries? Or perhaps it was because this group of gospels treated women equal with men? Both concepts were diametrically opposed to the books that survived. So what else is there in these books and how exactly does a religion founded in blood, and reinforced by crusades and inquisitions further the true message of God? This book is a good place to start answering questions like that. Everyone will have their own opinion, but at least by reading the book it will be an informed decision.

All of my life I have felt that something important was missing from my relationship with God. Reading this work helped me to fill in the holes that orthodox Christianity built deep inside. Call it The Mysterys, call it gnosis. Call it what you will, but I found myself and my God when I read this work.

I began this book with a fascination for the ancient Minoan civilization, a keen interest in with the people and cultures of the eastern Mediterranean, and knowing virtually nothing about Gnosticism. What an enlightening and enjoyable book the author has produced. The book is based upon her interpretations of fragments of early texts, written in Coptic during the first two hundred years following the crucifixion. Pagels summarizes not just the writings of these early spiritual leaders, but also the social and political issues of the day.The Gnostic texts, discovered in 1948 buried in a remote Egyptian cave, describe a spiritual tradition of meditation, inner visions, and self-discovery, rather than a quest for salvation. The author's translation and interpretation from the Gospel of Thomas follows: "There is light within a man of light, and it lights up the whole world. If he does not shine, he is darkness."In Pagels' reconstruction of the period, another profound distinction between the Gnostics and the orthodox view that became the Roman Catholic church, was the participation of women and men as equals in their religious traditions. Mary Magdalen as apostle, is the prominent example. The texts describe God in both masculine and feminine terms with a complementary description of human nature. The book is a fascinating look into the founders and the founding of Christianity.

This is a wonderfully written, interesting, nich book about theological influences in the two centuries after Christ died. It features the Gnostic influence on the early Church and the discoveries of original Gnostic texts, which were not included in dogma and the New Testament. Every Christian should read this book because it discusses the very basic core beliefs of Christianity and why the basic beliefs of the Catholic and Protestant churches came to be - and - the theological disagreemets about these core beliefs from the Gnostic and Orthodox sides. This book isn't for everbody, in fact, it may enrage some people because of the difference in the Gnostic view about the origin, nature, personhood, and purpose of Christ. It is draws heavily on discovered Gnostic texts and the real hatred of the Gnostics by orthodox Church leaders at the time - from their own orthodox writings. The disaffection flows from both sides in no uncertain terms. These disagreements come down to life and death decisions. For example, Gnostics looked at orthodorx Christians, who went to martyrdom in varous forms of torture and death, as wasting their lives for nothing, not understanding Christ's true purpose and message. These Christians were ignorant in the eyes of the Gnostics. Gnostics opened their church to all: men and women were equal, all social classes were welcome and women particpated in church functions on equal footing with men. Gnostics rejected the orthodox power structure brought on by orthodox bishops. To Gnostics, there were different levels of spiritual knowledge. The book also shows the influence, on the Gnostics, by Buddhism. This is a fascinating book based on the Gnostic texts discovered at Nag Hammadi in Upper Egypt, December 1945. My niece loved this as a gift.

Just a caution. My 11 year old was enjoying this book, until he came to this part: page 198: "...his mother fell down the stairs... [she] was hurt so badly that she couldn't move; she'd broken her legs and an arm, and she had other internal damage. Little Frederick was the only person who could help. but being so young [9] and frightened, he didn't know what to do. He simply held his mother at the bottom of the stairs and screamed. By the time they were discovered, Frederick's mother had died."I felt that was a little unnecessarily traumatic. If your child is a gentle soul, or a hero-type like mine, this may be a little disturbing. It gave him bad dreams. I would have liked to have known about this before he started reading it, so maybe another parent will benefit from the fore-knowledge.

My rating of 3 stars is probably lower than what my 4th and 5th grade readers of animal-fantasy will give it. For them, the ability for animals, zoo and those thought to be extinct, to travel between the natural world and a more fantastic one is likely to grab their attention immediately. Throwing in a group of four friends with a treehouse fort who seek out adventure, a missing club member, developing relationships between humans and animals, evil Sasquatch creatures, and some magic means that I will buy this series for both my libraries. It is my hope that in future installments that Chick backs off the over-describing and the grandstanding/gushing done by Mr. Darby as he pleads his case for the saving of the Secret Zoo and the council that supports its existence. I am also hoping for a bit more depth in the character development of our four Action Scouts and more subtlety in setting us up for subsequent books. With this being his first book and it having such a unique premise, I am looking forward to watching the series unfold and improve in literary quality. But I will purchase them one at a time as I read them to be sure that aspect does improve. I recommend this book for readers in grades 4-8 who enjoy series such as Mull’s Fablehaven and O’Hearn’s Pegasus.

I bought this book for my 7 (almost 8) year old Granddaughter. She loved it. Parts she read herself and parts I read to her. For her there were parts that were 'kinda scary' and parts that made her laugh out loud. She is thinking about passing book 1 on to a friend. I just ordered her book 2; to quote my Granddaughter, "I can't wait!".

The Secret Zoo by Bryan Chick is a fun, fast-paced story about friendship, family, and (best of all) awesome animals. Mr. Chick seamlessly blends mystery and magic into a modern fairy tale, part detective novel and part adventure into Narnia.I downloaded The Secret Zoo after hearing about it at a local elementary school. I'm glad I did. I read it out loud to my 10-year-old (at the time) son and wife. We all enjoyed the book. The main characters are nice kids that my son could identify with. He especially liked Richie, the comic-relief character and adorable goofball. All of the characters, though, took a backseat to the awesome animals. I think I've mentioned them. Along their adventures in the Secret Zoo, the Action Scouts (the name the heroes give themselves collectively) meet and befriend polar bears, rhinos, prairie dogs, and more. They also encounter scary (age appropriate) sasquatches! What's not to like?All animal fans and everyone who has ever wondered where all the locked doors and mysterious nooks and crannies in a zoo lead should read this fun book.

Short chapters, engaging story. Curious obsession with animal heads "rolling" and the word "rump" on the part of the author which induces giggles, but otherwise very enjoyable book broken into short chapters for reading at bedtime. My kids love it. A little spooky in places, but not so much that we had to stop reading. Even Disney movies have spooky themes. It's a multiple book series, so the story doesn't move much in each book. We're on book 3 now and hooked. Kids won't go to bed without it.

I read to my children each night age ( 7 & 9 ). I don't normally purchase a book with this many chapters but this book has held more sons attention nightly, they can't wait for me to read to them which make bed time much easier. P.S. I enjoy the story line as well, I highly recommend it.

My 7 year old loves this book and won't put it down. He struggles with some of the "bigger" words but overall doing well reading it. He is already looking forward to the next one.

I bought this to round out my series of Secret Zoo books and enjoyed it as much if not more than the others. I was glad to see the same characters continue in this book particularly because it is their individual personalities that help make the story. It was a quicker read than the other books in the series but still worth reading. Is suitable for an avid reader in the fourth grade and up. I have enjoyed the world Mr. Chick has created in his story line and can not wait for the next one. I recommend that you buy this book for your younger reader or yourself, even if you are a Grandmother like me!

I moved to West Virginia two years ago, and this was one of the original guide books I purchased to learn more about my adopted state. But once I settled down to the task of organizing weekend excursions to this or that county or town, I found this book to be close to useless. When you travel, you target a particular location. Hence your travel guides need to tell you what you'll find: the best/innovative restaurants, historic items you don't want to miss,fantastic parks or scenic byways, stories the non-local would never hear. You use the guidebooks to peruse one region after another, contemplating your route. This book, unfortunately, uses absoutely no geographic organization whatsoever. You cannot ask it, "If I head south on 119, what will I find between Morgantown and Elkins?" The material is organized by subject, and you'll find discussions of several different locations on the same page! It might work for the armchair traveler, but if you're actually going to be--oh, I don't know--actually moving around inside West Virginia? Hopeless.

I grew up spending summers in the Clarksburg area with family and now my dad has a summer cabin near Phillipi. I purchased this for him and he has said it has been great for finding new and interesting places and things for himself and guests. I also have used this book when I have been up there and I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting West Virginia.

Sometimes you just have to get out of town--completely out of town. A Tom Clancy book I once read had a character flee the city and I was surprised by how quickly he found himself deep in West Virginia. Since then I've done this myself a couple of times.But it's not enough just to get out. This book helps you make the most of your escape by guiding you through the quirky byways of this less-known state. The third edition, published in July 2008, adds new attractions and updates the status of historical favorites. Jeanne Mozier writes with a friendly and engaging conversational style. Readers feel like they are traveling with a wise, witty and well-informed friend.The chapters are organized by topic ("Adventure Driving," "Shopping Treasures," "Unusual Plumbing," etc.) This is perfect for planning next weekend's adventure--you can map out the options that match your mood. It's less convenient for those last-minute escapes that land you in some small town, wondering what to do next. Amy and I spent quite a while in a Shepherdstown restaurant--that the book helped us find--flipping back and forth from the "Way Out by County" index to figure out our next move. It was doable, just a little less convenient.But the inconvenience was minor. If you live near DC, buy this book and keep it in your car's glove compartment. You won't have to waste time finding it for your next escape. If you live further away--count yourself lucky. Then buy it anyway for the interesting history and personal introduction to West Virginia.

Author and West Virginian Jeanne Mozier has compiled more information about what West Virginia has to offer than most of us would ever want to know in this labor of love book. From the mundane to the amazing, Mozier takes us through a whirlwind tour of the natural and man-made wonders of the Mountain State. It's clear that Mozier loves West Virginia, and if we cannot find ourselves matching her enthusiasm for the Mail Pouch Chewing Tobacco factory in Wheeling, we can still appreciate her efforts to bring to our attention the highlights - no matter how modest - of West Virginia's contribution to the US tourist industry.I have to admit, I love these type of books. I often go off the beaten path in my travels, in search of the forgotten tourist trap or the weather-beaten historic marker. Since I live close to West Virginia, I've had the opportunity to visit many of the sites that Mozier mentions in her book. Some places are real gems, such as the bathhouse in Berkeley Springs and Shirley Dougherty's Harpers Ferry Ghost Tour (I highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in the supernatural. Shirley's unique storytelling style makes the modest fee well worth the money). As a guide to all those other West Virginia wonders that I have yet to see, this book is invaluable. I have yet to taste the succulence of the Pepperoni Roll (the state food of West Virginia?!?), but Moziers' mouth-watering description has piqued my curiosity.If you are planning a trip to West Virginia, or if you will be merely passing through, pick up a copy of this book. Then go visit the New River Gorge, see a mummy, sit in George Washington's bathtub, climb an Indian burial mound, and walk the streets where John Brown once led a slave rebellion. And when you stop at a gas station for a fill-up, don't forget to pick up a pack of Pepperoni Rolls.

Jeanne Mozier came up with a great idea when she started collecting information for this book. There are so many guides to natural wonders, historical and educational sites, monuments, and so on. This is really something different for people who have a lot of imagination and curiosity. I live right next to West Virginia, but now I can't wait to get out and explore some of the more "way out" aspects of the state.

Beyond the usual travelers' tips, Jeanne Mozier takes the reader along the folk by-ways of this mountain secret-state. West Virginia's population isn't huge, so each oddity merits special attention, and well-deservedly. But as one of The Mountain State's native writers once said, "If you flattened it out, it'd be bigger than Texas." Discover more than ramps and pepperoni rolls in the steeply-crenellated hills and hollows of a charming and picturesque place where individuals are treasured, even staunchly defended.

As a former government employee and current consultant, I was tired of hearing the same information that is obvious to anyone who has been in the industry for a few years, and that should be obvious to anyone who can use Google (SAM.gov registration, GSA schedule, NAICS codes, etc.). Joshua provides information that is unique, relevant, practical, and entertaining. So much of Joshua's inputs are right in line with the things we do internally and teach other companies that actually result in sales - e.g., focusing on shaping opportunities pre-acquisition. I also learned several new tips that will help me avoid mistakes and stop wasting time. Only 1 small complaint: There is no table of contents in the Kindle version that allows me to link directly to a particular chapter.

For some time, I along with several of my colleagues have searched in vain for a book on government sales that focuses on the business aspect, not simply your NAICS codes, creating a capability statement, or all the other standard recommendations that you see in all the other books on Amazon. We’ve been looking for a book with tangible recommendations and strategies for actually doing what everyone else tells you to do. After purchasing several books by other well-known government “experts,” I can finally say that we found the right book! What I love most about this book is that it demystifies government contracting by providing a wealth of knowledge, tactics, and strategies that actually produce results! And unlike other books, I found myself laughing and enjoying the process of learning these techniques from page to page. There are even suggestions of how to prepare yourself outside of the office, including how to think about business travel on your way to government conferences. Just like the author, this book is an invaluable asset that I will continue to look to for leading guidance. I’m one of those folks that had never seen Mr. Frank speak at a National conference and now I can’t wait to find out his schedule and go see him speak live! AWESOME strategies and recommendations. I first found Josh several years ago at a conference, and quickly became what I called a "groupie" for any classes he was giving. His ideas almost seem like common sense AFTER you hear them, but never crossed my mind before. We've implemented many of them, and they have transformed our way of doing business (and grown our revenue exponentially!) This book is almost unfair, because it's a compilation of so many of his ideas all in one place and almost makes it too easy. Thankfully, I'm a believer in abundance of opportunity even in competitive Government contracting, so I don't have to purchase all the copies for myself!
